Suggested OPTIMAL SETTINGS for Oppo

Suggested OPTIMAL SETTINGS for the Oppo Digital OPDV971H

I have just bought an Oppo and must say i am very impressed with the performance out of the box.

I am wondering if there are any experienced Oppo owners who can suggest various settings to squeeze just that little bit more performance out of this excellent player.

I have a Samsung LE40R51BX display connected via DVI to HDMI to the Oppo.

LOL - Hey calm down its only my user name LCD USER

720p or 1080i is all the oppo can display!

Just for the record there are not many displays out at the moment that are capable of displaying true hi def 1080p.

1080p is the holy grail of HD - its very rare and expensive at the mo.

All i am asking with this thread is:

If anyone can recommend some basic settings to get the best out of the excellent Oppo.

i.e. sharpness settings etc from within the players OSD menu.

I know that the DVI outputs 720p or 1080i but i am interested in tweaking the settings of the player to maximize the PQ.

Please let me know your thoughts Oppo users.

everyones settings will be different due to different circumtances. How will this help you?. Your best bet is to buy a simple set up disc.

Its best to match to your native resolution if possible to avoid any unnecessary scaling, Soif your display is 1280x720, then use 720p,
if its a lower res then 480p/576p may be better. In most cases using 1080i wont deliver a better picture unless your display is 1920x1080i/p native.

It is worth having a peak as your eye will more than likly pick the best setting, but 720p or 1080i may not always be the best options to use.

and where the hell has the spellchecker gone?

Thanks for your comments some were more usefull than others "Nic Rhodes" !

My display is a Samsung LE40R51BX

40 " Diagonal Screen Size (Inch)
16:9 Aspect Ratio
800:1 Contrast Ratio
170/170 Degree Viewing Angle
1366x768 Panel Resolution (Pixels)
1049088 Picture Quality

I am trying to find out if its generally better to enable/disable some of the options on the oppo player i.e.

Truelife ?
CSS?
Noise reduction?

I know what 720p/1080i setting to use.

And please Nic Rhodes dont reply with useless comments like "everyones settings will be different due to different circumtances"

For example
it depends on the ambient lighting in the room
or the angle at which i'm viewing
or whether or not the viewer has glasses or contact lenses
the quality of the disc i'm playing

NEED I GO ON STATING THE OBVIOUS NIC RHODES

If you want to know about

Truelife ?
CSS?
Noise reduction?

why don't you ask about them. You asked for experienced oppo owners set up advice. As a 'beginner' here I offered some, some very good advice to solve your issue, which you chose to ignore. You were even asked why you thought this would help in order to better understand what you required from your enquirey. It is called a two way dialogue to better understand what you are after.

People will generally answer all you questions if you ask them in a polite way. Forum member spend lots of time helping people to set the displays up and the biggest single thing you can do is to use the set up disc that was recommended to you.

Abusive posts like above will elicit you little help from people. And re Truelife ? CSS? Noise reduction? etc ? Yes they are different with different display technologies. I use different setting for my different display devices (Samsung included). All set up and learned by using a set up disc.

People will help when you start to behave as the forum would like, rather abusing people with 'nasty' posts like above.

Tell me about it Nic. Some 3 poster just took the hump 'caus I said pics of PJs were fun but you couldn't tell much from them. Being a display for moving images I thought it a reasonable stance.

Your advice was right. Everyone's tastes are different. I like pics sharper than most for example.

Brightness -08
Contrast +02 to +04

Everything else Off.

You have to reset these to each time you change discs on PAL, but not NTSC.

Nic is quite correct. You can't even be sure that another DVD player the same as yours will perform in exactly the same way. Then add to that the fact that your screen too will most likely perform a little differently to a like model, and you end up with meaningless comparisons. In effect, you could have somebody with exactly your setup who's settings may not suit yours. Nic gave the best advice, get DVE or Avia and use it to set your system up properly.
