Toshiba SD43-HK

I have owned this DVD home entertainment system for over a year but have only just been able to use the component output with it since I recently brought a nice HDTV. I was just wondering if anyone knew if this player supported progressive scan when playing through component leads? I was just wondering as the quality difference has improved immensly since changing from RGB to component. Episode 3 looks amazing on it

I don't believe this player does Progressive Scan. Are you using it in PAL or NTSC mode by the way? I've got one of these knocking around in the spare room and never got it to play through component over both - only NTSC mode (even though the manual states PAL)

I've been using component through PAL and NTSC (depeding on the DVD region) and it works fine. I get a picture through both.

Curious... I did some more digging and found a usermanual online for it that states:
PAL - RGB and Composite outputs
NTSC - Component and S-Video

Which certainly matches up to what's been happening to me. Also, the printed manual I have - incorrectly for my machine at least - states that whilst in PAL mode, with the player on Standby, pressing the SLOW button should switch between RGB and Component and it should display which mode (much like the PAL/NTSC when you press Zoom whilst in standby) - it doesn't...

Is there any chance you're simply playing PAL movies in NTSC mode and getting access to the component output that way??

If not - can you elaborate on what you're doing to get it to work?

Cheers
JMS

I am using a Pure AV component cable (the one that costs 35 quid from Dixons).

I pressed the slow button to switch my player from RBG to component. Made sure the switch at the back was still set to RGB and not composite.

When I play PAL DVDs I press the zoom button before turning on the player to put it into PAL mode and when watching NTSC DVDs I do the same but put it into NTSC mode

I don't know if there is anything I am doing in particular to get it working. I just plugged everything in and it worked fine.

On another note about the progressive scan bit I have been told that my TV does the job for me anyway. I've connected it to a 26" Samsung HDLCD TV

Hmmm... perhaps Toshiba released this dvd in a few versions, perhaps with updated firmware as PAL component isn't available on mine. One thing, you didn't mention whether the Tosh actually gave you a visual confirmation (via the LED display) that you'd switched to component - like it does when you PAL/NTSC switch

As for progressive scan via the TV... that's not entirely correct. Your source (dvd, ps2, xbox etc.) has to provide a "progressive scan" image for the tv to display. The TV will certainly do some scaling and clever processing but it won't be progressive scan per-se.. sorry, but you'll need to get a progressive scan/upscaling dvd player to get enable those image enhancements..

Having said that, the HD43SK doesn't give a bad little image and if you're happy then that's the main thing.

Yeah, they do the business.. sounds like mine was an older one as the Slow button doesn't do diddly - still, its only a standby now. The new Samsung arrived yesterday and Progressive Scan via HDMI working a treat in PAL and NTSC.. :D
