Blu-Ray soon!!

found this thread on another forum for you guys to look at. This will apply to the north American market but gives you an idea that things are indeed starting to move forward. The guy who posted got the info from a Sony briefing and hes also quite reliable on the info side off things.

Well, for those having some interest in this……..

The Sony Blu-ray is expected to debut June 6, 006.

I say.... 006 for all those people familiar with my postings in my regular neighborhood.

Sony originally planned on having a couple models at different price points available to the discerning buyer….. but now it appears there will only be model that should have an MSRP of somewhere around $1300(£750 approx..gandley edit).(this model is much slimmer and compact than prior prototypes you may have seen.)

It will be at CES and they will be announcing titles at CES – which will be available for purchase at the same time the actual machine can be bought.

So, WHAT titles there be, inquiring minds want to know?

Perhaps one of the greatest movies ever made?...........Paul Bigelow and Rob Tomlin hold on to your hats !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why, Lawrence of Arabia, of course! (You two may stop reading now and daydream for the rest of the afternoon )

also.................

Fifth Element
Apocalypse
Ghost Rider
Triple X
Kung Fu Hustle
Resident Evil
There are some more but, I’m not at liberty to publicly disclose them all.

And to all those naysayers bitchin bout how long a wait it will be before current titles become available in the Blu-ray format……….

Well, when Memoirs of a Geisha, Bond (with the new guy), Click, Underworld 2 ? do eventually come out on DVD they will simultaneously appear on Blu-ray for a seamless transition for the discerning videophile. There are other titles which I cannot list at this time.

good news, but theres no way im buying that first gen player. Not at that price range.
I think ill get me a PS3 even if just to watch Blu Rays on.

Once I see denon and pioneer making MR Blu Ray players, then ill get one.

agreed although the blu-ray group have still not said region encoding will continue. or should i say it will not be forced but be left up to studios to decide. PS3 also will most likly have no region locking.

The upgrade for your PC will be slightly more substantial than just getting a new drive. You'll need:
- Windows Vista
- BluRay Drive (note that early ones won't record onto CD)
- HDMI equipped monitor (and if you want to output to a TV an HDMI connection on that)
- Internet Connection (I assume you already have this )
- New Software Player (one that supports AACS)

...unfortunately then not quite as plug and play as we found in the early days with DVD drives. The requirements will be the same for a HD DVD drive as well - but at least with the PC solution we can have both formats running together. I think this is the route I will take until things become clearer as to whch format is the least 'limited'.

The HD DRM will be cracked like every other piece of software released, rendering all these copy protection measures redundant.

From what i have been reading this is adaptable to each and every disc so even if one is cracked they can easily change it thus DRM could be a huge problem for those of us who currently buy all our movies from different countries.

I don't think its that simple anymore. even the discs now get there own water mark that is not possible to copy with consumer recorders, if the player does not read the water mark it refuses to play the disc. and then can disable the player for your trouble if it thinks you have copied software.
This is probably why the blu-ray group do not even want to allow a managed copy. i think control will be really tight.
I read the standalone units will not need to be connected to the internet though

even if they did crack it, are you going to run the risk of it closing down your machine if they were wrong? I dont think i would take the gamble TBH. it could be an expensive mistake.
