Hi!
A little background:
My DVD player connects to the receiver using an S-Video cable and an optical one for audio, the VCR's output is connected using a simple pair RCA cable and an S-Video cable, the receiver has 2 sets of connectors, one pair for input and the other for output, what i described is connected to the input in the receiver,
the output for the receiver is connected using the same type of cables only it connects to the VCR using a SCART connector.

Eventually when i turn the DVD on the receiver is set for input from the DVD the VCR is set on the correct (and only channel), and so is the tv,
the video appears in black and white and with some interference, if that wasn't enough!!!
Who's the culprit here??

That'll be the Y/C (s-video) signal going into a composite-only input. You're losing the chroma which is also adding a bit of noise.

Sorry, but I can't quite figure out from your description what is connected to what
