Denon 1920 SACD problem !

I have just tried to play the SACD version of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon" on my new Denon 1920 and there is no sound. The unit is connected to my Arcam AVR300 via the digital coax connection.

DVD and normal CD sound work perfectly not SACD.

The SACD disk plays with sound on other CD players in the house (in stereo) but not on the Denon 1920.

Any helpful advice would be much appreciated.

Thankyou

You need to connect via the 5.1 analog outputs from the 1920 to the AVR300 Ext.In inputs for DVD-A/SACD

Thanks for that ozdvduser.

Why will SACD not work connected via the coax digital output ?

Copy protection and different formats mean the player cannot output a digital copy at high res and it is a different format anyway, that the SPDIF receiver chips do not understand, neither do most DACs.

Thankyou Nic. The problem now is that my DVD player is 10 metres away from my AVR300 receiver so I will have to compromise somewhere.

Will I notice any significant degradation of picture quality if I was to connect the DVD player to my CTV via a 10 metre scart lead ?

10m SCART is not really recommended by me. Why not just connect L and R for stereo SACD (did surround SACD) and use that (also okay for CD, DVDA). It is what I do, never realy be a fan of multi channel SACD personally. Richer Sounds do a 10m lead for not silly money.

Re video 10m I would use component if yo can

SACD would require a higher data rate than is provided by S/PDIF.

Thanks again Nic.

I'd like to retain the option of listening to multi-channel audio, its a nice feature to listen to now and then.

Unfortunately my CTV does not have component inputs so I have no ption but to use scart. What is the main problem with using a 10m scart lead ?

Not stictly true, SPDIF is capable of 24bit / 96khz which is better than SACD can do (see DAD) however SPDIF does not talk DSD at all. This is for stereo signals. DSD could have been convertd to high quality PCM but decided not to for copy protection reasons. Multi channel is too much high res SPDIF for high res signals regardless of DVD A or SACD hence HDMI / IEEE1394.

10m SCART leads suffer more than most from pick up / interference issues and are already bad in this respect compared with good quality coax (which is cheap as chips). Tread carefully.

I disagree. AC-3 and DTS can be sent over S/PDIF. You can send any data format you like over S/PDIF, it's just a question of whether it is understood at the other end. I agree that S/PDIF can support 24-bit stereo signals, but I was really talking about surround.

do you disagree with?

DSD works in the Mhz rage where as PCM works on the 10s Khz range. The two are just not comparable without a translation which is what Sony blocks. Player are allowed to do this internally (DSD to PCM for bass management) but NOT externally.

SACD Is not just about surround or stereo it is about BOTH. The original poster would not have been getting sound via stereo or surround. Sure low quality compressed surround sound bitstream signals can now be sent over the revised SPDIF format but this was not always the case. The spec was revised to include them and too make all our lives easier, as was the extension to 96Khz. This is fully compatible to what I have posted previously. It has never been possible for SACD (or DVD A) to use SPDIF as it is a bandwidth limited interface and both stereo and surround capable interface was wanted (on both formats) that could accomplish BOTH stereo and surround sound in all possible modes.

24 bit / 96kz is limited to stereo signal and is potentially better than DSD is capable of with stereo but is prevented for the resons discussed already. Surround channels (AC3 / DTS) is limited to 44 / 48Khz. Even DTS 24 /96 is limited 48Khz!!

Nic, I don't think we really have anything to disagree about.
