Im after a DVD player and I am rather specific

HDMI output is a must
A quality 720p picture a given
Good sounding
Not too expensive

The ability to remember the last location on a DVD even when its removed from the player

The ability to do the above but with more than one DVD (my current Sony will remeber the last position on around 20 DVDs)

Multi-Region

Idealy the ability to skip all those annoying adverts and FBI warnings

Any suggestions

not too expensive meaning?

if under a grand then i can recommend my Denon 3910...(can be picked up for £700 brand new nowadays...altho that will be a sale, usually around £750-800)

has HDMI (component or RGB) and DVI outputs, can upscale to 720p and 1080i

has WM10 ability....and read pretty much any disc u chuck in it, havnt had a problem so far reading anything......even scratched to buggery old discs seem to work pretty good unless the scratch is obviously too deep and blurry...

has extremely nice quality sound, from DVD's, DVD-A/SACD and with the right speakers even CD.....(altho the later is debated, but i think its just a case of careful matching with speakers, Monitor Audio seem to work nicest apparently)...it has a very good onboard DolbyD and DTS decoding altho as usual thats only 5.1, has opt and coax digi out for 6.1 DTS discrete/DD-EX if you want it.....

however im not sure about the remembering where you are stuff......im pretty sure it can remember where you left it if you take the disc out but dont quote me, might have bookmark ability too, i never have need for it tho so i cant remember what the manual says...heh

i'm sure others will give you other options at different prices :-)

oh and it can happily skip future release adverts, but the Piracy is a Crime stuff i dont think any player can skip.....at least none i've heard of (shoot me if im wrong..with a spud gun tho...heh)

Grateful for advice but non too happy to get another Denon - got a 1910 but hardly use it due to it having so many problems - its slow, clunky and just a pain to use

also (and it may seem picky) but the memory feature is one of the most important - watch a lot of TV DVDs and the ablity to remember where I am in each one is a god send

price wise possibly around £300 but cheaper the better

I think companies like Techtronics used to provide chipped machines what could do miss out the FBI warning etc but I think that's rare now...PJ

I could be wrong, but I don't think there are many players which remember stop points for multiple discs. I know Sony, as you do, offer this on certain players.

Check out the new Sony DVP-NS92V. This seems to have a 40 disc resume memory (but check). It has an upscaling HDMI output of 720p/1080i & can play DiVX & SACD as well as the usual DVD+/-R/RW all for £179. Have a look here http://www.askdirect.co.uk/search/Sony_DVPNS92VB.html

As Nic says it's not usually possible to skip the FBI/piracy warnings, but the film trailers sometimes can be skipped through with next chapter or, when this doesn't work, you can use the fast forward.

it surprised me when friends said you cant skip past adverts, because my 3 year old JVC does, my 1.5 year old cheapo thomson does, and my 3910 does...lol.....they wouldnt believe me at first tho till i showed them...lol
half of them then tried pressing various buttons and found they could...heh boy were they miffed, they'd been spending the better part of a year some of them watching the new release stuff....heh

This is dictated by the discs and not the player if the player follows the rules. I skip adverts on every machine I have I think when allowd but have to sit through every FACT piracy telling me I am breaking the law, the fact I have never done this just winds me up, I am soooo tempted.....It is the authoring, something Disney are particularly bad at this, improved with recent disc issues however.

Well still on the look out

Was going for the Sony as seems to meet most of my needs, but the problems mentioned in the officail thread have now put me off

Then looked at the Samsung HD950 - but have two reservations (a) the manual selection of PAL / NTSC would be an annoyance and (b) dont think it has any sort of disc memory

Any body else have any ideas - budget up to £200
