Best value upscaling DVD player.....Suggestion please

Hi there

have a nice LCD HD panel on the way and I'd like to make best use of my HDMI connectivity by optimising my huge DVD collection....

I have been looking into upscaling players and would like the best I can get for sensible money (bearing in mind we are gonna have to shell out for a true hi-def player soon) Sub £300 would be nice

Top of my list so far is the DENON 1920 but i would welcome any suggestions.

p.s. I would prefer multi-region "out of the box" to save me the samll risk of messing up a firmware upgrade

you are wasting your money buying an upscaling player. Much better to get a good one that outputs 480p / 576p

An Oppo DVD player?

The Oppo gets good write ups, never seen it in action myself however.

The Denon 1920 is a good bet.

So is the Panasonic S97 if you can find one... I found one for £140, good price for a fantastic player.

Alternatively as a previous poster suggested, just get a decent player that outputs 480P / 576P like the Pioneer 575 and let the display do the scaling.

Interesting, I never thought of that.......So is the panel's scaling better than having a player that scales???

The trick is to prevent two scaling operations and achieving that in the best way possible. If you display has exactly the same resolution as the upscaling player and just 'passes through' then there is a good chance the DVD player may / or may not be better. It is all down to the quality of the scaling. If the display doesn't have the same as a HDMI resolution and freq then you will be using the scaling in the display anyway.....

You could do what I did, buy both the Pio 575 and the Oppo and then you can advise others not to waste their money....

Only, the Oppo is an amazingly good player actually - and seems to get even better with each new firmware release. It's now my player of choice but the 575 is still one hell of a bargain...PJ
