Second hand DVD players

Guys,

a little advice if I may!!

I just wanted a little advice as to what was a good second hand DVD player to be looking at.

I have seen a few Denon 2900's and Arcam 88 plus's knocking about and they seem to be well regarded.

What I am really looking for is something that is a little older so I can get a £7-900 player for less money. Like buying a luxury car I guess??

So is there anything else I should be keeping an eye out for or should I save up for a bit and go for something new with up to date technology? Not really interested in HDMI for the time being just want the best component picture I can get for around £300.

Toshiba 9500 would be the one to look for but they are growing in poplularity!!

Whilst there certainly is a place for the older machines and if you dont want the bells and whistles then they can be a good investment but if you buy an old machine that used to cost £700 for only £400 doesnt mean you are necessarily getting a bargin. A cheap DVDr bought today will almost certainly out perform a previously expensive DVDr from 5 years ago bought for the same price second hand.

I'm still using my DV88+ which will be five years old in Jan.. Still produces a stunning picture and the sound quality is still up there. Sure yo cold pick one up for silly money these days

Anyone got any more advice on new or older machines I should be looking at?

I am looking to upgrade from a 2.5 year old HK DV25 which has been a good player but is starting to get a little old and knackered!!

I still have a Panasonic DVD-A350, my first DVD player, which cost me about £700 but I wouldn't think it was worth £7 now. My current player, a Sony DVP-S725D, was about £500 and I'm now thinking of getting a Marantz DV6600 for £350. Quality/features go up and prices come down

I'm hoping that by about 2010 I should find something with HD-DVD, Blu Ray, 1080p etc. free in a box of cornflakes.

I'm still using my Denon 3800 multi-region with no problems. I have thought about upgrading a few times, but it's working so well and for what I would get for it, I don't know if it's worth the bother.

I've had a Sony DVP-S735 for 3 years now.

It doesn't play SVCDs so I bought a Pioneer 757 (I think) for about £100 at Richer Sounds.

I was back the next day for a refund.

Every time I watch a DVD on other folks' systems I'm so glad I kept my Sony.

I agree Sean, the Sony is a damned fine machine. If I do replace it I will leave the Sony hooked up for the kids to use and will be able to compare it with the new one.
I am only doing this because I'm curious about SACD and DVD-A. I am happy that my amp and speakers are up to a better source signal.
I'm not convinced that SACD will last for long after the launch of HD-DVD so I need to hurry up.
