Upscaling DVD Players List

I'm looking for a decent upscaling DVD player with HDMI to HDMI outputs.

So far I've found the following at a reasonable price:

Samsung DVD HD850 (less than £100)
Toshiba SD350E (less than £100)
Philips DVP9000S (£200-£300)

Any know of any more?

i'd like one that upscales thru component and is multiregion. if anyone knows of one that is available in the UK, that'd be good.

Add the Momitsu V880 and V880N to that list (upscale over component and DVI)

If you compile a list of these 'upscaling' players, separate out analogue and digital as upscaling may be different.

The Samsung HD745 upscales via component once the hack is applied, the only problem is the picture stinks via component. One bright spark on this forum has identified and removed the offending capacitor (I think) which seemingly Samsung put in the signal path in an attempt to make it look artificially inferior to the DVI output...PJ

Question Upscaling DVD Player

I am hopefully about to take the plunge with a 40" Sony LCD (V-Series) I just need to convince the SOH on the aesthetics/size/cost!

having read a number of threads on this forum, i remain unconvinced that an upscaling DVD player provides a significantly better picture than prog scan over component. all i seem to see ae concerns with Blocking, poor quality DVD's giving poor quality output etc etc.

has anyone got an upscaling DVD hooked up via HDMI to a HD screen and if so are they really happy with the result?

In other words, is it worth going upscaling or would the prudent choice be to wait for HD DVD &/OR BluRay to get themselves established in the market place and get a true HD output to the HD screen?

Kevin

I'm happy with the Oppo, but wasn't happy with the Samsung HD745. In other words, it depends on the player/screen combination - results can be poor / OK / stunning - but until you try it you're not going to know, unless someone has the identical setup as you and comments on this forum.

I wanted the versatility of having two players hence why I bought the Oppo. I also figured I'd get a good few years out of it before I take the HD plunge. However, I'm more than happy with the quality of the Pioneer 575 via component.

In the end it comes down to whether you can resist not having something plugged into that HDMI socket...PJ

Add on:

Denon DVD-1910, DVD-2910 and DVD-3910.

Also, the Panansonic S97, although very difficult to buy now.

Cheers,

Martin.

How much would you pay for a Panasonic S97?

I have seen a few go on Ebay for around the £200 mark, seems quite steep.

Does seem a bit steep - a few have sold on these forums lately for a good deal less than that - I am sure if you do a search you'll see some examples of what I'm talking about.

Cheers,

Martin.

Shows that beauty is in the eye of the beholder - it's horrible!

Mind you I don't care about how it looks so I will add it to my list of HD950 replacement contenders along with the Denon 1920. Shame the Oppo doesn't do SACD.

Anyone know when the NAD is being released ?

Ray
