Pioneer DV-575 / 470 v Dual Layer DVDs

DVD+R Dual layer (Verbatim)
---------------------------
I put about 40 files on the disc, divx which I knew it could handle. The first 4 files wouldn't play properly, I could hear the laser tracking back as if it was struggling to cope. They from file 6 - 40 they played as expect and the laser was not making the searching noise.

DVD-R Dual layer (Verbatim)
---------------------------
The first 4gb'ish read and play perfectly. The files I presume are on layer two are listed but it cannot read them. It searchs for ages before returning an error message about "operation can not be completed".

Discs were burnt using a Pioneer A09 with firmware 1.57 and Nero 6.6.0.15a.

I've emailed Pioneer UK to confirm if the play can do dual layer. Does anyone else have any experience of DUAL LAYER discs only and the 575 /470 or newer 585 ?

The only thing I heard was that someone reported that the 575 played dual layer
discs (which you burn yourself), no idea what type it was.
Haven't tried it myself even though I got a dual layer burner.
Again, that it is something which is not documented to work for the 575
which makes it hard to complain to Pioneer about...
Anyway, I think I saw something about the 585 playing dual layer discs
but I can't see it mentioned on the Pioneer site or in the manual now...

Edit: the documented support for DVDs with the 575 is rather poor:
DVD-R/RW compatibility
• Compatible formats: DVD-Video, Video Recording (VR)*
(* Edit points may not play exactly as edited; screen may go momentarily blank at edited points.)
• Unfinalized playback: No
• WMA/MP3/JPEG file playback on DVD-R/RW: No
...
They are not mentioning DVD+R or DVD+RW which seems to work.
They are only promising DVD-R/RW to work in DVD-Video mode, not
anything else, allthough putting MP3 etc in a filesystem also
seems to work...

Thanks for your email.

The DV-470 does not support the use of DVD-R Dual Layer disks.

The DV-470 does not 'Support' any type of Dual Layer writeable disks, only commercially produced Dual Layer disk.

*I'd add this applies to the 575 as well.
