Upgrading dvd player

When upgrading AV, it seems new boxes are always bought (except for some top end machines that can have software upgrades?) whereas with computers, it is not unusual for new components to be installed in existing systems.

My quesiton is this. Why isn't it possible to upgrade my exisitng Pioeer 737 to something more modern -for example something that includes sacd etc? Why do I have to buy something completely new?

Thanks

Retro fitting out a 737 with new laser assembly and associated hardware for sacd, pal progressive etc would be expensive on a model by model basis. A financial no no for any company who's product line changes on a yearly basis.
Typically nowadays the majority of dvd players have intrinsically little value at all after a few months.
