Samsung HD 850 v's HD 745

Is the 850 better / worse does it have more or less features?

I am looking for a DVD that uses the Faroudja chip set to improve the fast motion blurring 'fuzzing' on my Optima H30a

The HD 850 is also cheaper than the 745 strange

any thoughts

Biggest difference is the 745 uses a DVI connection whereas the 850 uses HDMI. I have the 945 which uses HDMI also, PQ is excellent. The sammy players are generally very good and they have no probs with reg 1 discs. Only prob with the sammy is there are a couple of s/ware issues but once your watching a film you soon forget these. Id say either get a 945 or get an 850 or 950, they're all great value for money.

I doubt it. My HD945 came complete with HDMI->HDMI cable plus HDMI->DVI cable. Check the specifications.

I can't see any reference to the 850 being Divx/MPEG 4 capable or SACD/DVD-A capable. Given it's phenomenally low price point I'm guessing it oes none of these.
This would be the primary set of differences between it and the 745 (which does all the above) along with the HDMI output on the 850 compared to DVI-d on the 745.
Don't forget that HDMI video and DVI video are identical, HDMI simply adds digital sound capability to the connector. HDCP is carried on both HDMI and DVI signals.

You are right.

See the sammy 850 thread as the 950 (just ordered for £128 inc p+p) has the lot. The 850 has no DVI you need a £13 adaptor.

I hope so I just bought one - £95 including shipping

From everything I've read they are the same player barring the facia, and the DVI, SACD and DVD-Audio on the 950. I have a TV with HDMI and I'm not going to use it for playing music so these are not features I need and at this price its a fantastic bargain. This is basically the same player as the HD945 which HCC rated player of the year 2005 when its rrp was £200+!

Also I checked the manual - you can see the UK version via the Australian website and it explicitly says the 850 supports DIVX.

Cheers
KableMan

PS. Has anyone who ordered the player from softjam recieved one yet?

Cheers Kableman, that's all I wanted to know, I'm going to order one as well now.
I will never user dvd-audio or sacd so it's pointless paying extra and waiting for the 950.

Zoran 7 chipset for the 745/945 for scaling, not Faroudja. Works pretty well without the macroblocking which afflicts the Faroudjas. If you search the 745 threads - lots of info.

Not sure about 850 though !

745 makes a comeback

I've been watching National Treasure on the PJ the last few nights (fell asleep both times so you can tell how gripped I was). Unusually I've been using the 745 via DVI (the 575 via component is the main player) and I decided to revisit some of the PJ's settings, I switched the DVI input type on the PJ from DVD to COMPUTER and the PQ became a lot punchier, brigher, more shadow detail. I'm now even more impressed with the 745. Still not quite as sharp as the Pio but pretty close and I'm amazed at the lack of artifacts...PJ

I have my LCD also set 1:1 (i.e pc mode) and that gives a much better colour balanced image. Interesting.

I have the sammi 850 and i am a little disaapointed.

Yes-HDMI to HDMI, div-x , not SACD

PQ attaches to Hitachi 42PD7200-OK only when comp with Tosh 330e via comp (I)- the tosh has more detail and more natural colour and more depth

Is there something I am doing wrong?

Please Help

Out of interest try the Sammy upscaled in Component and see how it compares. I get a very good component PQ as well as DVI. To upscale in component you need to apply the MR hack.

Hi

I tried to in component and the MR hack-the hack works but in HDMI when upscaling the screen actualy switches ie black then pic and for some reason misses out 768p. In component not switching just scrolling ie can see setting changes.but pic the same no delay.

Someone let me know if this should happen please.

Where did you guys get the HD745 from? I'm interested in the Samsungs ability to upscale over component, as my PJ only has a component.

I've seen the HD850 and HD950, but is the HD745 the only one that can upscale to HD over component (with the hack)?

Are you sure? My 850 upscaling via hdmi- yes you can see something happening and there is a delay.

Component no changes evident and no delay just the resolution indicator changes in the top LH corner even after the hack

Hi Azz,

mine does. TV confirms the new resolution being input also. Are you sure you have done the hack correctly (I had to try a couple of times before it worked ).

I could not do hack, but still resolution change numbers are evident via component, but picture does not change! But I prefer PQ via HDMI any ways!
Looking for a region hack on US player desperately? Any one?

Hi masher,

I tried the hack once and inputed no 9 (region free) and it works with region 1 and 2 disks. My TV hitachi 42pd7200 after pressing info all it says is component or hdmi nothing about resolution.

Any ideas
