Denon-Link Upgrade coming

Denon announced that they made an agreement that allows digital transfer of SACD audio via their Denon-Link interface (DL 3rd). There will be upgrades available for the DVD-3910, DVD-A1XV and DVD-A11 with details on the offer available June 1st at the Denon websites.

May just be a firmware upgrade, may require some hardware work. However quite perfect for owners of the aforementioned players and a Denon 3rd equipped receiver like the 3805.

I'm not holding my breath on this one especially if it costs us to do it. Personally I prefer the analouge outs on the 3910 into the 3805 especially for CD and DVD Audio Maybe SACD will be different but I wouldn't count on it.

Dont get me wrong I would love to ditch the 6 extra leads around the back but not at the expense of SQ. Sorry make that 8 leads dedicated forgot the analouge stereo pair for CD

Now with both audio and video available completely on digital outputs, I'd like to see an edition of the player that does completely away with the analog connections. Call it DVD-3915 and offer it for 200 quid less for those who want to move straight into the digital future

Are the DACs on a £1000 amp better than those on a £900 player?

They're sure better than what you get after pushing the signal through an analog path before amplifying it

Will the upgrade be just for the 3910, or will the 3805 need updating also?

As I understand it the upgrade will be for their DVD players with Denon Link (going from Denon Link S.E to Denon Link 3). The 3805 already has Denon Link 3 so is SACD ready. More info here:-

9b seems to be the latest firmware in the US, and another will be coming up with the D3 update. What´s the latest multi region firmware.. and will the next one with the D3 update also include everything that 9b in the US has?

Do the players actually have to be sent in in order to fix BTB problems!? I actually haven´t checked mine with a THX test... is it possible to know if by the serial number of the player if it passes BTB or not?

Seems that units did have to go back to Denon but it was a Firmware update rather than Hardware as far as I can tell. Assume you've seen this thread at AVS?

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...A&pagenumber=8

You can check the original box to see if it has black circles to show it's been updated or not or whether the unit is ok. I assume this also applies to units outside the USA!

Hopefully you have The Incredibles? Here's how to use the new Advanced THX Test Patterns.

If you don't, then here's the Brightness setup for other THX Optimizer discs.

don't forget that SACD is licensed to SONY, players may have to come in to be recorded for legal reasons.

More then likely it will cost you £200 more beacuse the uptake would be less for people without projectors with HDMI/DVI Or those with amps with out IEEE or Denon Link.

New details on the upgrade

Spoke to a Denon rep today and they told me the following:

DVD-3910 receives a 3 CD upgrade kit for firmware update only. This includes a how-to sheet so owners can do the update on their own, no hardware doodling required.

A11 and A1XV require a firmware update as well as an update to the programming of a logic chip onboard that has to be done by Denon. Depending on which of the two models you own and sales region you're in, you'll have to take the device to your dealer or arrange for pickup for the upgrade.

There will be web forms going up on the Denon sites where you can request the upgrade, you'll be required to present the serials for your player as well as your DL 3rd enabled receiver/amp to be eligible for the service.

More details will be available June 1st on the Denon websites.

Imho these hardware software upgrades that are way more delayed than new releases are a gimmick to get $100s out of us! on ongoing basis!

Not sure what you mean, as in the US they are freely downloadable from the website. I don't think anyone would want to spend money on firmware upgrades.

Actually, I'm glad they do provide upgrades as there are plenty of manufacturers who simply require you to buy new kit.

Is there anymore news on this? When will it be available and how will it be available (download, direct mail from Denon, from a dealer)?

Thanks

The US site still doesn't have the new firmware to download that enables SACD via Denon Link. I think this needs to happen first and then a few weeks (months?) later Europe will get it. But still no sight of an improved European Denon website yet. *sigh*

Is it definitely happening though for the DVD-3910?

Oh yes, definitely. Not sure whether a firmware upgrade for the 3910 will be enough or whether the amp will need one as well (which would mean sending it to Denon), but it will definitely work without any hardware changes.

The 3805 is already Denon Link 3rd, so no mods to the amp.

A firmware upgrade for the DVD players is needed.

Spoke to a dealer and they reckoned summer July/August (but whos guessing?)

Well, it seems that we in the UK are once again the last ones to receive any kind of information from Denon. The German Denon website has had upgrade information since about a month. You can basically register your 3910 and amp via the website and they will send you the 3 CDs necessary to upgrade the 3910 to Denon Link 3rd Edition. The CDs also include the latest 6609-9B firmware.

I'm sure we'll be able to do the same in the UK by....maybe Christmas?
