What's so good about a DVD player that plays DIVX?

Hello,

A stupid question I'm sure but I've never really looked at DVD DIVX players, and I see they're all the rage now, what's the fascination? Is the idea that you can download material in divx from the net burn it to DVD and then play it? If this is the case isn't it a bit of a longwinded process? Am I missing out on something awesome?

Cheers
Sun

No you're not missing anything as far as I can .

Unless you're into home movies or are ripping old VCR or Laserdisc material and want to minimise the size of files you create then DivX and its' ilk such as Xvid and others really aren't a lot of use any more IMHO.

In the days before DVD burners then the idea of compressing a DVD down to the size of a CD or two while retaining reasonable quality had attractions .. if you were inclined to copy DVDs . Nowadays with DVD burners selling for £30 then I see no point whatsoever in continuing to use DivX for that purpose.

Maybe I too am missing something, but I don't think so.

Currently to convert a Divx or Xvid to DVD can take HOURS (4 to 24+ hours depending on knowledge, apps used and CPU speed..)...then you get a noticably lesser-then-DVD picture (and normally sound) for all that work....

Also some of these files become a real PITA to convert, sound goes out of sync, picture break-up etc

Being able to play the Divx directly saves all that hassle.

Although after saying all that, I just use "XBox Media Centre" and play the Divx files over my LAN

thankyou both, glad to see i'm not the last one to know

Seeing as though there's no real benefit and a large ammount of time involved to get result I think I shall put my pennies aside and find another gadget to consider.

Cheers

If you use sites like suprnova then you'll have lots of avi/ DivX format films. A DivX player means you don't have to convert to SVCD or DVD to play them....

suprnova is dead and so are a lot like it

the benefit to me is d/l US tv shows hours after they've aired in the states, and sometimes BEFORE they've even aired in the US.

Apart from the home-movie application, DivX has always been mainly used for pirating video.

Hi Sun - you hit the nail on the head. download the latest films from the net and burn a handful to a single dvd. No payments, generally good copies of the latest films and not really much hassle when you just leave your computer on downloading. That's all there is to it!
