I bought a SONY DVP S525P multi region player.
I played Lock Stock and 2 Smoking barrels and it plays fine. according to the disk it is region 2 and 4
I then tried to play THE BONE COLLECTOR which was a region 2. It would not play saying that it was not the correct region disk for the player. Why is this happening and is there a way to manually set the player for a specific region or set the player to automatically choose the region as it obviously is not set to do this at the moment!

The reason for manual code selection is that sometimes the automatic does not work (depending on the disc).
You should be able to set it manually using the remote control, contact your dealer on how to do it (if it's possible at all).
