Denon DBP-2012UD Owners thread

Just put down my deposit on the new 2012UD, got a very good deal at the Bristol Sound & Vision show (thank you guys ). Player should be ready for collection in a couple of weeks.

Hope this is not the 2011UD all over again, but I have been told that the player has been delayed until April.

Do you know when in April?
I have been holding out for one of these, but am not going to wait forever. I would get the Oppo-93 today if it came in Silver.

I heard it had been the 7th April and now has gone back to the 28th April. I agree if there was a Silver Oppo-93 that would be a good route to take. It does not inspire confidence at all taking into account the situation with the 2011 plus the big price hike too.

Oh what to do

As soon as anyone finds one of these actually available can they post a message here - have been waiting, and waiting, and waiting.....my player broke ages ago and wanted this as a replacement, but I'm starting to lose interest with such a long wait and may have to look elsewhere - perhaps the Oppo 93 as suggested by others.....but I did have my heart set on the Denon so am trying to wait it out.

Have phoned several dealers over the past few months and they say early Jan, late Jan, late feb, late march etc etc - I wish Denon would just be honest and put out a reasonably achievable date rather than string us on endlessly....I actually spoke to Denon UK about 3-4 weeks ago and they said a shipment had arrived in their distribution warehouse "that day", and that I could expect to start seeing them in the shops by the following week - but still haven't....

When they are finally available, an early review from someone who gets theirs first would be good!
Fingers crossed for April

Sorry AFM1 & IanW, I was told today Denon are now not giving a release date until they are delivered to their warehouse in Germany. So its anybodies guess when they will arrive. I would think Oppo sales will benefit hugely from this farce

Thanks for that update. I am very disappointed with Denon UK, they seem to have little commercial acumen. No matter now, my Oppo 93 is on order (even if it is in Black, lol).

Grrrrrrr!!

If this keeps on, I will cancel my 2012UD order and get the Arcam AVR400 instead. You may be thinking how does an amp replace a blu-ray player? Well I want both but decided to go for the player first.

Same story with the Marantz UD7006 I ordered at Bristol. I'll be giving it until the end of the month and then if nothing turns up will cancel and get the Oppo BDP93

Last week the same homeless German claimed that the Martians had abducted and then probed him.

How many names are there on this list of yours and does the warden know about it?

I only ask because I'm not allowed a spoon let alone something sharp like a pen!

Ah, I'm not privy to the names on the list as I'm still a 'new member' on this forum unlike yourself sir, hence I said "bet"

As for the warden, he is still on his rounds and I will ask him on his return.

No spoon and I thought I had a hard life

And if they do give you "the probe" I will ask them to warm it first

But what I do know is that I may have my Blu Ray player sooooon

All up and running, although did not get much time to play with it.

Straight out of box it looks to be at least as good as my Pioneer LX71, will hopefully get to setup properly tonight. Also, SACD DSD works with my ONKYO

I went for black to match the rest of my kit.

Hopefully TRON will turn up today for viewing.

Ian.

Hi Ian,

I demoed the DBP-1611 a while ago, and there was a scene in Sherlock Holmes where Jude Law was indoors talking to some guy with a beard and you couldn't clearly see the colour difference between his trousers and jacket which looked the same colour (yet in reality were dark grey/black and light grey), plus his red waistcoat was very dull - this was compared to the pioneer LX52 on the same TV which showed a much brighter red waist coat and clear distingtion between the trousers and jacket - much more clear vivid, but not garish.

If you have that disc, would be interested to see how the 2012 performs - I guess you could do a comparison on the same dispaly between the 2012 and your LX71...

Also, Iron Man 2 - there's a scene where there's a close up shot of the front of the audi as Rob.D.Jr pulls up and on the LX52 it was much more glossy shiny and vibrant, but on the 1611 it didn't quite have that rich colour and it felt lacking.

This put me off the 1611, but the pioneer didn't have SACD etc so I've been waiting for the 2012 to come out, and also considering the Oppo 93.

Hopefully with the ABT in the 2012 compared to the no-name processor in the 1611 the picture will be improved.
Some people say BluRay performance is pretty much similar on all players now days, but based on the demo's i've done I would disagree - although these were with out-the-box settings with no tweaking...

Anyway - would be great to hear what you think when you and others start using it and if anyone has these discs and this player (or the Oppo 93) would be cool if you can give them a quick spin and check it out

Do you plan to output SACD via HDMI analogue ?

Also if PAL DVD is a requirement Denon have hobbled the performance of the ABT on other models with ABT and it's worth checking if this is the same of 2012. The ABT can stuggle relative to other solutions with PAL film material in auto cadence and best results are achieved using ABT's forced 2:2 odd or 2:2 even modes.

Avi,

My amp does have HDMI input, but I plan to use the analogue connections for SACD, so that was another plus for the 2012 (or Oppo 93) over the 1611. Also for me, i'm more interested in the multichannel aspect of SACD/DVD-A, not just hi res stereo.

Regarding the PAL DVD issue, for me, I dont really have much of a DVD library so I am only really interested in bluray and hi res multi channel audio.

Cheers, AFM

AFAIK the Denon doesn't support DSD to DAC and will first convert DSD to LPCM. I believe on the Denon this is limited toLPCM only at a 48kHz sample rate over HDMI and may be the same as used in the LPCM conversion to feed the DAC. The Oppo optionally decimates DSD to 88.2kHz LPCM but also supports direct DSD to DAC in addition to DSD or LPCM at 88.2kHz via HDMI.

Avi

I'm just about to buy a DBP 2012 to replace my DVD 3910. I did the multi region hack for the 3910 some time ago (it worked fine). Does anyone know if there is a multi region hack for the 2012 or know if it is the same as another Denon Blue Ray player?

I own this unit and can confirm (from the printed manual) that the above statement is not true. The DBP-2012 definitely supports DSD to DAC (via HDMI only) to Receivers capable of decoding DSD bitstream. I'm going off what the manual says and have not tried it as my AV receiver doesn't have HDMI (that will be changing soon though )
