pioneer or arcam?

I have the chance to get either a Pioneer dv757ai dvdplayer or an Arcam dv89. I know these models have been around a while and have been replaced (or are about to be) but I quite like the look of them.

My current player is a Pioneer dv737 which has been great but I am now looking for Pal progressive (which the 737 does not do) and DVDaudio.

As far as I can see the Arcam used to cost more (about £1300) but the Pioneer has the benefits of SACD and i-link.

I would like to use the player as a cd unit as well.

Any preferences?

Thanks!

yes - if PAL progressive was available for the 737 then I would probably stick with it for a little longer...

you have intrigued me...

well if you are happy short of prog scan, the obvious answer is the pioneer player. After all, its going to be an improvement along the same basic lines as the machine you already have..... which you are already happy with.

Taking the arcam would introduce a whole different perspective that probably is not worth considering if you are already happy.

all the best

If you're going to use it as a CD unit as well, obviously the Arcam would be lots lots lots better. It's going to be lots more expensive as well...

Hi

Arcam DV89 available from £499- see threads in Special Offers forum. Unbeatable at that price- and would win hands-down on CD replay.

I went through a similar issue last week....is it the Pioneer DV-868AVi-S or the Arcam DV79....

Pioneer won this one as it was SACD and DVD-A as opposed to just DVD-A like the Arcam. (Arcam looks significantly better though)

The arcam will also play most SACD's, but only in stereo.

So it would depend weather you like multi channel music.
I changed from pioneer to denon, then to arcam.
I still have a pioneer 565, which is said to be ( by some mags) quite good at CD replay, but my Arcam 89 makes it sound like crap.
I could never really tell much difference between my other players, each one sounded better as i changed them, but after compairing my arcam against my 565 in the same room, side by side, the arcam is brilliant.
I've evern started buying CD's again...

the dv89 is actually £599 not £499 as suggested (this is for the dv88+). This would be my choice of the two suggested, however if Dexter is happy with what he has (excepting the pal prog) then without being able to demo the dv89, the pioneer would be the wise choice. Of course if possible, demo them both and find out

I'm sure you meant that to read Arcam will play CD layer of Hybrid SA-CDs.
Arcam can't play DSD layer of SA-CDs.

I am currently going through the same Pioneer versus Arcam process. Auditioned the 868 and found it lacking smoothness on CD replay. Waiting to audition the DV79.

Thanks
