non hd sound with analogues out?

hi all,
i've 2 sony 550's connected with 5.1 analogues using the players as decoders (in two rooms) for bluray playback...one i've also got a digital connection for dvd playback....dolby digital and dts etc..
without sounding too much of a thicket with my other player connected with analogues only what 'sound' am i getting with dvd playback via anlogue connection only?
cheers in advance.

Not sure if I understand correctly but are you asking what is the difference between DVD audio via SPDIF versus using the multichannel analogue output ? If your player decodes the lossy codecs then these can be decoded and output over analogue (same as HD codecs). With SPDIF you typically have the option to decode in the player and output as LPCM or output as bitsteam that will be decode in the AVR, pre pro etc.

thanks.....
basically what i'm asking is.....if i select the dobly digital 5.1 in a dvd's (not blu discs) sound menu and the blu ray player is doing the decoding via 5.1 analogue connections to my 'ext in' amp.....i'm obviously not getting 'digital' sound as it's connected with analogues?
.....i've only just started using my second player for dvd playback as well as blu and was thinking if it was worth using a digital connection to the amp for dvd discs or stick with the analogues?

cheers.

Correct your player has performed the 5.1 decoding and digital to analogue conversion process rather than the sound processor. Usually "Ext it" analogue input means the DSP of the processor is bypassed and DSP i.e. cross over, distance, trim needs to be done in the player as it may no longer be applied in the AVR. This mean results can vary depending on the player DSP options and DAC performance compared to the processor.
