PS3 or LG BD390?

Hi all,
apologies if this has been done, a search didn't reveal much though.

Ok, i want a blu-ray player that can be network connected, DNLA certified and will play .mkv, divxHD and other formats.

So it seems that the PS3 and the new LG BD390 will do what i want. I'm quite a fan of LG (got 42 PQ6000 and DVD upscaling player).
I've heard the PS3 will be better for multi-media purposes as i can use PS3server on my WHS to help it encode and play formats that it doesn't natively support.
However is the new slimline quite noisy compared to a standalone player?

Its approx £50-80 more expensive than a BD390, but it can do more. I'm not really buying it for gaming, but i do have 3 kids who wouldn't mind taking advantage of that, despite their gaming pc's and xbox360.

So, PS3 or BD390.....?

Your views are greatly appreciated, thanks.

If audio/video playback quality is not of paramount importance, then I'd go with a Ps3 for it's media capabilities.

Not sure the ps3 is really £50-£80 more than the LG??

The Sony BDP-S560 would have these features, too:

BDP-S560 (BDPS560) : Blu-ray Discâ„¢ and DVD : Sony

...although it's in the same price range as the PS3, so I'm not quite sure why it should be preferred over the console.

As an aside, you do mean a wireless network connection, right?

I'd be interested in any thoughts on this, as well!

Sorry, not correct. The only thing you can stream to the S560 is photos and it doesn't support MKV at all. Otherwise a great machine

Why do you say that. I thought it was myth that the PS3 was a poor blu-ray player. I'm not too fussed about the audio streams as i don't have a speaker setup (yet)
If i went for the PS3, i'd go for a bundle (games for the kids...and the sake of it) with large hdd and they are between £270-£300. The BD390 can be had for about £220 so, i'm not far off really. The PS3 on its own is about £249 iirc.

If i knew the PS3 was a quiet as the player, then that would win i think.

Well, yes i suppose, although it doesn't matter as i have wired wall ports where it would sit anyway.

The PS3 can't handle MKVs directly either, but if you install PS3 Media Server PS3 Media Server on your PC it will transcode those files for you and you'll be able to watch them via the PS3.

Please bear in mind that this is quite a processor intensive task, but it works well.

The BD390 handles MKVs natively, via USB (with NTFS support for large files), burned disc or Streaming and the results are very impressive.

..., but it's absolutely crap at playing PS3 games

aahh crud. I thought the PS3's forte WAS playing native .mkv's. I'm certainly willing to use PS3server, my WHS can crunch that out no problem.
Could the BD390 play .mkv from the network, not just a usb stick?

I tried PS3server for the xbox360 (it has options for it) , but the 360 sucks as a media server, so i gave up on it.

Oops! Sorry 'bout that. Hadn't thought about .mkv!

So - would that mean that the LG is the only player that can do it all, straight out of the box?
