Despite my cynical views on bluray (as you may have seen on recent posts), I've bitten the bullet and bought a PS3 slim. The Sainsbury's offer was too good to pass, so I've joined the HD revolution.
So far I'm impressed by it's flexibility, but as yet haven't tried any bluray discs as I've yet to get any!
What is puzzling me is how to ensure my normal DVD's are upscaled to the best effect.
My screen is an LGPG600 plasma and so is only 720p. What settings should the PS3 and the TV be to ensure only one of them is scaling?

The only signal a screen wont scale is a signal received at its native resolution , Im not sure if the PS3 will output at 1366 x 768 or 1024 x 768, or whatever native resolution your screen is , but if not , you get additional scaling on the TV no matter what you set the PS3 too.

This is just one of the many overlooked reasons why a 1080p set is a good idea , at least with that native res , blu ray and any other HD signal of that res are untouched and it is also a lot easier to limit scaling to one device.

Can your TV accept 1080i/p?

Set the PS3 to either 1080 resolution (whichever your TV can handle of course) and then let the TV downscale to it's resolution and test it. (most of the times this works best unless you have a Pioneer TV where thge scaler for SD seems to be better than anything else out there TV wise)

Then Set The PS3 to 720p and test it... make the comparison and decide for yourself.

You need to decide which one works better for you

I'm not sure if my set can accept a 1080 signal as it's not a 1080p set. Also, I'm a bit confused as to how to set the output in the PS3 menu. I can't find a setting that says 720, 1080i, 1080p etc, only a menu that says normal, double scale or full frame?

I am also about to bite the bullet on a PS3 slim having seen it cheap at Sainburys...managed to resist for now!

Cant remember exactly where the menu is but there is a setting for Output Resolution. I'm told it's under display settings somewhere...

How cheap are they selling them for at Sainsburys cos im after a new bd player cos my Sony BDP300 is just to slow and was gonna go for the Sony BDP360 but if the new ps3 slim is cheap would rather have that, already got a xbox360 but always like me playstations cos some of the games you can only get on the ps3(metalgear,gran-turismo) so how much are they?

i had the same dilemma and just set it to 1080p, cantg really tell much diff but it deffinatly doesnt do any damage.

Sainsburys are selling them for £199. Not a bad price but I'm not sure what their aftersales service will be like. Still, at that price it's a bit of a bargain...

I had a blu-ray player running on my 32" Pioneer LCD - it looked pretty but not a great visual difference at that size over SD.

The difference is, however, really noticeable now on my 92" projector screen.

So, any remaining blu-ray doubters... I can understand that on a 60" screen you will be pleased with the difference but think, the bigger you get, the better blu-ray looks

That should be obvious but I wonder if many people who are 'sold' blu-ray players in shops think that they will instantly notice the difference on 'regular' sized tvs...

hi pcookie i have the lg pg6000 and yes it dos except 1080p just set your ps3 slim to out put 1080p i have tried both 1080p and 720p cant realy see a diffence between them wellcome to the blu-ray revolution

I've been reading a bit about this as I'm keen to get a PS3 Slim for both Bluray and Games so appologies if this appears slightly off topic on the games front.

I also have a 1366x768 TV which accepts 1080p24 so I ideally want to set my output to this for Bluray playback. However I read that most games (not all) are 720p. I understand that it is best to have games output at 720p.

Does anyone know if there a way of setting the PS3 to output the correct resolution (ie 1080p24 for BR and 720p for games) based on content?
