Standard DVD Player on HD-Ready TV?

Hi. I recently bought a 19 inch HD Ready TV and im very happy with it. Ive got a PS3 also and im very happy with what that is doing with it but if i want to now buy a DVD player does it have to be an HDMI upscaling one or would i also get good results with a standard one?

I ask because the PS3's upscaler is brilliant on some things, most notably newer movies but on older stuff all it does is give you upscaled grain lol. So would just a standard DVD player for that sort of thing be better?

Re: Standard DVD Player on HD-Ready TV?

the price of upscaling dvd players has really come down in price - look at the following:

Philips DVP3360
Toshiba SD390
both available from richers or amazon

the upscaling does make a big difference

(dont spend more than £10 on a 1m HDMI - money down the drain)

IMHO I doubt if the difference would be noticeable on a 19" TV. The grain you are seeing may be intentional by the director or the quality of transfer to DVD.

Well ive noticed it most on my DVD box set of The X Files Series One, which compared to new releases looked slightly grainy on my old CRT anyway. Filmed in the early 90s and probably the transfer isnt that great. As i put a newer one from the same box set in, series 8 or whatever, and its much better.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. I bought the boxset of Prime Suspect and the original series looks pants even with an upscaling DVD player - Its the way it was filmed and upscaling or not it will look pants - Garbage In Garbage Out.

In your opinion does an upscaling DVD player make it look better or worse? Does an upscaler iron out the imperfections or just make them more noticeable?
