Your quite correct i am wrong here thank goodness (though i must say i was misinformed at first by pioneer, if your reading this you know who you are

) ....my problem then seems to point back to my Denon which for some reason is splitting the 5.1 into 7.1 but i cannot work out why & nor can Denon!! as it has no ProLogic IIx process etc etc as stated below from Pioneer (or the other option could be that maybe my LX-08 is playing up!)
After the update the DTS-HD Master Audio is used and converted to LPCM for the analog audio outputs, so retaining the full quality of the Master Audio sound track. The DTS-HD Master Audio stream also contains a normal DTS sound track at its core, so devices that can't understand DTS-HS MA will still be able to extract the core DTS stream. And thats basically what happened with these machines before the update. The LX08 would use the core DTS stream (normal DTS) and then convert that to LPCM for the analog outputs, so the end quality was limited by the normal DTS quality and you would lose the extra audio resolution of the MA sound track.
So if you play a DTS-HD MA disc now, you will retain the full audio
quality. I beleive that if the source is 5.1 then the LX08 should output 5.1and the two surround back outputs should be silient. It could be that the amp is doing a ProLogic IIx process to re-create the surround back channels?
