Better than PS3?

What blu-ray players (£200 - 300) are there that give a better picture than the ps3? If any.

Not bothered about anything else just pic quality

+1. agree..
PS3 is a super quick PC basically, and 7 cores on board..
This all sums up to a brilliant Blu ray player..
Also one of the fastest load times on any BR player...
Buy some movies instead..

Re: Better than PS3?

My Samsung BD-P2500 with reon processing does better with DVDs than did my PS3 with its fragile imaging, but then the Sammy is too cheep for you.

Re: Better than PS3?

Thanks for the replies so far.

Main reason i want a player is to save on the power consumption of the PS3 and also save on wear and tear. With this in mind are there any that are on a par?

I would imagine they all use lesser than the PS3 you can check on the players official site.

Smile Re: Better than PS3?

I have a US PS3 and think its superb, but it does have its drawbacks i.e no analogue outs. I am looking at getting a Sony S550, but a US machine as I dont think a UK hack is available to make it blu ray multiregion. The PS3 can do a lot more than normal players and wear and tear will be high. I used to have players for separate things. ie dvd player, dvd recorder, cd recorder but have found a much better solution is to have it all in one... PC, all my movies are on my PC and are streamed/saved to the PS3

My PS3 gets a lot of usage, still ticking two years on, if you want better picture then you'll be looking at around the £400+ mark I guess

PS3 passes on 1080i on BD as is. Most new players now will convert 1080i to 1080p. If your current display doesn't handle 1080i well, then this could make a difference. Think concert BD's and increasingly TV stuff recorded at 25/30p which has to be stored on disc as 1080i.

Re: Better than PS3?

i used to use a ps2 to a jvc projector. I then bought a sony 550. The amount of extra fine detail in blu ray stuff is obvious. ps3 religated to the downstairs tv.

Would a 550 be AT LEAST on a par with the PS3 for Pic Quality? What about a Panny BD80?

Re: Better than PS3?

Repsonses here have surprised me. Personally i've found my S350 gives just as good quality as my PS3 for BD and noticeably better DVD Upscaling (I don't miss the heat/noise the PS3 generated while upscaling either)

Also works better than my PS3 with my Harmony remote and bitstreams HD Audio (doesn't sound much better but i get a nice light on my AV Receiver now )

Don't get me wrong i still love the PS3 but it's duties are now limited to Games and Music/Video streaming from the PC.

Re: Better than PS3?

Thanks for starting this thread..........appreciated and a newbie so all the help welcomed of course

My lad is currently moving out and hasn't got a TV so I have decided to be the good Dad and let him have my old Sony LCD - A cunning plan to get a new Panasonic in reality

After browsing the forums I think my best bet would be the Panasonic TX-P50G10B Plasma.

So bearing all the above in mind I have a PS3 (40GB) backward compatible version for PS2 games and was wondering if this would be fine to use as a Blu Ray player on the new T.V. (Buying something like the Panasonic SC-BT200 Blu-Ray Disc Home Cinema System would put me well over budget)

Also, sorry if off topic, but can anyone recommend a Home Cinema System that would compliment the PS3 if indeed it is fine to use as a Blu Ray Player?

That PS3 being a rare item, I would use it for gaming only, as it has the backward PS2 compatibility.
I have had a newer PS3 (non PS2 compatible) Blu ray drive go on me in less than 100 hrs use...
This is only a word of warning..
Not all PS3 drives will go, but as your is a super special PS3, I would be inclined to purchase a dedicated Blu Ray player..
Only food for thought, How much do you want for it BTW .. LOL (jk)

How is the 40gb version compatible with PS2 games? I thought it was only the 60gb that had that feature.

Re: Better than PS3?

I have retired my 60Gb PS3 from Bluray use for two reasons:

1. In case the drive goes as I will not reasonably be able to buy a replacement for this model.

2. It is so loud! Not sure if mine is faulty or not, but the fan gets loud when the unit is just in standby, let alone when playing bluray. I can accept this when playing games, but not watching movies.

Picture-wise, I think it is as good as either of my standalone players.

Re: Better than PS3?

in standby?!!

the PS3 would be (arguably) the best blu ray player out there if it wasn't for the stupid fan noise. The sound quality and load speed is much better than my Panny 35. the picture quality is on a par and the dvd playback is great. just a shame the machine doesn't like summertime.

I agree with Uridium and Daveb975 on this, I have a launch 60gb PS3 which is a great machine but since the last main firmware update the fan noise has been far too loud especially when upscaling dvds.
Since buying the Sony S360 I've enjoyed noise free viewing and I'd go as far as to say the pq is slightly better and as Uridium says it works great with my harmony.

Apologies I meant the 60GB version which I bid for and won at a charity auction. Nice way to get one especially as they were going on Ebay for well over double the money I paid and The Guide Dogs for the Blind and When You Wish Upon A Star Charities both profited

Looks like I had better save for a standalone then

Any suggestions?

Re: Better than PS3?

There's a New BR player available called a PS4, will be backward compatible with PS3, PS2, PS1, PSP and Atari 2600...
I'm kidding , I'm kidding , anything from Panasonic is good, BD 35, 50 and 60 I believe, Sony make good stuff, see what fits your budget..
