must do on a BDP-S550 before I leave for South Africa

Hi Everybody,

I have just purchased the S550 to take back to South Africa on Wed coming, I bought it for half the price I was quotes in SA.

Can anybody advise is there anything that I should do before I leave the country other that updating the firmware to ver 19.

It was purchased in the UK from the Sony shop in the city were I am presently staying.

Any region or area changes that I should concider or do before I leave.

Any techinical info that I should take back, any common errors I should check for before I leave, any help will save me time and money.

what is the best methode throught customs, say its a gift or claim the tax back.

Any assistance is appreciated

Hi.
Not sure if there's any extra to be done really? updating the fimrware certainly won't hurt that can be done anywhere of course if you access to the internet.
Don't forget there's nothing stopping you posting on the forum again if you need any advice etc.
Cheers.

HI kingfats,

Thanks for your support, will keep in touch, the trouble is were I live the internet is as slow as 15k and as fast as 35k connection speed, we are still waiting for the system to be upgraded.

Can only use work place for a decent connection but they limit you connection time.

I am not sure whether there is a mod chip for the S550 but it's worth having a look at if you play Blu Ray from different regions, I beleive the mod chip also converts the dvd part to multiregion also.

Worth checking out.

How will you be connecting up the BD player? through a soundsytem or direct to the screen?

I am using my NAD T763 with an additional 2 CH NAD amp giving the systen full 7.1 out to my AE EVO3 speakers

7.1 CH. INPUT
: Connect to the corresponding analog audio outputs of a multichannel source component such as a DVD-Audio or multichannel

NOTE:
There is no bass-management or other processing (other than master-volume control) available to this 7.1 CH. INPUT. While the multichannel
audio outputs of a DVD-Video player can be connected to these jacks, using the T 763’s own Dolby Digital and DTS decoding and digitalanalog

converters, via a digital connection, will usually produce superior results.

Not sure which will give the best sound yet dig input and let the amp decode the signal or using the analogue inputs.

Hdmi input to my LG 60PG70 Plasma and also Hdmi to my Panasonic projector .

Re: must do on a BDP-S550 before I leave for South Africa

My wife is doing the buying of all the blue ray movies and I do the hardware side this way we all get what we want. Any recommendations on which Blue ray movies to buy.

As I said before I am using my NAD T763 with an additional 2CH NAD amp giving the system full 7.1 out to my 6x AE EVO3 speakers, 1x AE EVO centre and 1x 15” AE sub.

Although I do not get True HD sound the amp does a great job with my present system giving me 7.1 using the amp processor digital optical or coax input.

The DVD player I am using is a NAD which has HDCD abilities, this DVD player produces great stereo results and picture and sound quality for DVDs using coax input.

NAD say

7.1 CH. INPUT
NOTE:
There is no bass-management or other processing (other than master-volume control) available to this 7.1 CH. INPUT. While the multi-channel
audio outputs of a DVD-Video player can be connected to these jacks, using the T 763’s own Dolby Digital and DTS decoding and digital analogue converters, via a digital connection, will usually produce superior results.

I guess the proof of the pudding is in the testing of both options unfortunately I don’t have any Hdmi input on my amp, when the amp stops working I will upgrade to one with Hdmi inputs.

The picture side is simple I think, Hdmi input to my LG 60PG70 Plasma and also Hdmi to my Panasonic projector which I am sure will look great if it’s anything like the HD TV pictures we presently receive.

Although saying it will be simple the picture side will be interesting I am presently using the RGB input to the HDTV and the picture quality is good so I will also give the RGB output of the S550 a run to see how it compares to the Hdmi picture quality.

This will be my last post until I return to SA thanks everybody for your inputs and comments
