Blu Ray or DVD Uspcaler

Hi, first time poster here asking a question which has no doubt been asked umpteen times already so apologies if so.

Ive already got an upscaling DVD player but am considering getting a BluRay player. Obviously BluRay discs will be superior to DVd but how will DVDs compare on a BluRay player rather than my upscaling dvd player?

Welcome to the forum.
All the new BD players seem to do a decent enough job now with DVD Sony/Panasonic are quite good for the money.
Cheers.

I agree... certainly if you buy mid-range, and branded - they do an 'ok' job on DVD. As long as your expectations are realistic, you shouldnt be disappointed.

Cheers for the replies. Currently got a Philips 37" LCD HD Ready and the Philips upscaler but mulling over a 42" LG LHH3000 Full HD LCD and the LG BD370 BluRay Player. Both seem to be getting rave reviews and both at very reasonable prices. Also got Sky HD so wanting to maximise what i get out of that as much as i can so think im needing to upgrade the old Philips.

Or a Sony TV with say a BDP-S350 Blu-ray player (better value with a bundled deal). My S350 does a fab job of upscaling DVDs for the money, some so much that I won't be buying the BR for some discs. Depends on the disc quality though. Plenty of choice out there...

Re: Blu Ray or DVD Uspcaler

Bear in mind that SkyHD doesnt go up to 1080p. It's limited to 1080i! But I have the BD370 and can say that yes, it's a solid Blu-Ray player! And I recently bought an LG TV and wouldnt fault it in ANY way! And I've always been a Sony person not trusting any other brand!

So you reckon any improvement with Sky HD on a 1080p screen opposed to a 720p screen would be minimal to say the least?

Apologies for going off the bluray topic BTW folks

Most people wouldn't see any improvement over a 720p screen unless they had a screen in excess of 50".

Which for movies, if handled correctly results in your screen getting a full 1920 x 1080 progressive picture at 25 frames per second. So it's still sped up for 50Hz transmission, but compression issues aside, means no loss of resolution from 1080p.

Depends, you'll get varying views on this. What you won't get, providing your screen handles it correctly, is any scaling. Providing they don't chop the bitrate too much, Sky movies in HD can look very good.
