PCM/HD Bitstream query

Hiya,

I'm pretty sure I have the right setting - HDMI carrying sound to Onkyo system (which decodes all formats). According to the manual I should set to 'HD Bitstream' - which I have - and all logos are displayed as required when jumping between sound formats and there is certainly a difference in sound quality. Can someone clarify the PCM side as I've heard people choosing this option in multiple threads (my player, besides the 'Bitstream' options also has 'PCM 5.1' and 'PCM 7.1'.

Anyway, I'm sure I have it setup right but any clarification regarding PCM would be great.

Re: PCM/HD Bitstream query

Bit stream the Amp decodes the signal.
PCM the player decodes it. There should be no difference! but this doesn't mean there isn't.

Re: PCM/HD Bitstream query

I beleive that bistream is the best option ( the audio signal is not process in any way) if your amp/receiver can decode all sound format.
LPCM is mainly for older amps that have not got the correct decoders built in.
Hope that helps

Yeah, amp decodes the lot so I'll keep it on Bitstream HD.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Bitstream it raw and let the amp do the decoding.

It depends if the quality of decoding is done better by the player or the amp.

Hi.
Yes PCM only no affect on bitstream.
Can you not just leave it enabled on both though? covers your CD's and PCM Blu-ray discs.
Cheers.

Hi.
Could be wrong of course but i'm guessing there must be a simple ON/OFF option for the feature? should be no harm done in leaving it enabled surely. (can be set to Auto from players main menu)
Cheers.
