hi

sorry if this is the wrong forum for this ,i have a ps3 and a 5.1 surround system connected by optical to the ps3 ( the sound system is a pioneer xbox360 one but can be used on any equipment).

anyway i would like to get hd sound when watching blurays but my system will not allow this , if i want hd sound do i have to have a 7.1 setup ?

also are there any sound systems available that have all that i require such as speakers and the reciever ?

Optical connections & Cables do not support HD audio as there is not enough bandwidth to support them....

You will need to connect your PS3 to your AMP via HDMI (if supported) for HD sound. It will also need to be an amp that has the HD codecs onboard...

Set the PS3 to output it's Sound via HDMI once connected and select LPCM as the transfer method. The PS3 will then decode the HD soundtracks and send them to your amp as Multi-Channel.. Job Done...

ok thanks , that means i will need a new speaker package as my amp has no hdmi and is intergrated into the subwoofer , is there any all in one (speakers and reciever package) sound systems out there that support the hd codecs?

The AMP doesn't need to have onboard HD decoding as the PS3 will be doing the Decoding

all it needs is LPCM over HDMI support.

Yep, no point paying extra for an amp with on-board decoding if you're using a PS3 as your Blu-Ray player.

There are loads of Sony all-in-ones that support multichannel LPCM over HDMI (& hence give you HD sound)

Off the top of my head, DDWG800, SS100, HTIS100...

I own this - brilliant product.

Got mine for £279.99 but you may be able to pick this up cheaper somewhere. Decodes all sound formats and unobtrusive. You won't need extra speakers as the 2.1 is fantastic.

Highly recommended.

As already said, it doesn't need to decode any of the HD formats, just needs to be able to accept multi channel LPCM over HDMI
