New DVD player required?

Hi All,

I've acquired a Pioneer PDP 505HDE Plasma tv but have a non HD DVD and Receiver and would like to upgrade the outputs to improve picture quality.

But first heres the kit I currently have.

NAD T531 DVD
NAD T751 AV Reciever (5.1)
Mordaunt Short Declaration 903 and 906 Speakers
Pioneer PDP 505 HDE + PDP- R05E receiver.

Righteeho.

Currently my DVD images are looking grainy and pixelated. I've been told that the resolution from the DVD is not adequate and it should be replaced. HOwever I am currentlyusing the SCART output and the DVD does have Optical output as well.

So, Plan number 1 is too purchase the new NAD T175 Preamplifier and use the T751 only as the power amp.
The T175 would then become the control centre providing the upscaling of DVD, VCR, and DSTV inputs. Or is there a flaw in my thinking here? The T175 also comes with a learning remote and a darn good one at that.

Plan 2 and the much cheaper option is to simply purchase a new DVD player, preferably Blue Ray with HDMI outputs which will immediately offer picture quality gains. However I now have an extra remote. I can also then hook up the optical out from the DVD to the optical input of the T751 Receiver and achieve better sound quality but the disadvantage is that my VCR image and DSTV image quality is still going to suffer.

What say you?
Which are the better options?
IS a Preamp the way to go?

Re: AV Reciever upgrade advise

If the DVD only has SCART output, how do you intend to connect it to anything in order to upscale and convert the RGB SD signal? No AV receiver has a SCART input and this means you will be forced to use a lesser quality non RGB component or composite connection to the AV amp or receiver. Secondly, you may have an optical output from the DVD player, but this only carries audio and not video!

The option of buying a new upscaling DVD or even a Blu=ray player sounds a lot better than trying to make the square peg of a DVD player fit into a round hole

Remote wise, buy a Harmony learning remote.

Re: AV Reciever upgrade advise

Ok so I've now decided that I'm going to get a new DVD player.

My primary viewing is Music Concerts and sci fi stuff. My TV is perfect for this.

However I am going to require a DVD player that really packs some audio punch; the NAD's are pretty good at this.

What would you recommend?

I am also most likely going to take the option of connecting a NAD T175 pre amp to the my NAD T751 AV receiver to do additional decoding and upscaling but this will follow much later.

Which DVD player would you recommend for Audio quality first and picture quality 2nd?

I'm partial to NAD but am willing to try others like Denon DVD 1940 which I can obtain for around $350-00 on a clearance.

Advice please

its been a good 8 yrs since my last upgrade so I'm loking for an education

Re: AV Reciever upgrade advise

As this has moved on to DVD players I will move it to the appropriate forum for you. Also I will update the title.
