Smile Toshiba SD-590...any thoughts???

Looking at purchasing this upscaling DVD player but cannot find many reviews. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who has this box or has seen it in action.

well have just ordered 1 of these. I've managed to secure one for £40 which considering what it can do I think is a great price.

Should have it within 7 days and will post a review once I've tested it.

Hi

I have one of these players, its great. I've used an SD290 before too, and was pleased with that.

The picture on the SD590 is fantastic, with the upscaling.

DIVX playback is fine.

Some great points - the fastforwarding is excellent, going at 100x speed, and something like 32x or even 64x in Divx which not all players do (useful, as divx doesnt have chapter points).

The Divx files can play their accompanying subtitle files, if available, which is also very useful.

The only downside is that bigger HDDs are a bit hit and miss. A friends HDD worked, but mine didnt (flash drives are fine though).

Since posting my last comment, I noticed that the SD590 doesn't upscale DivX like some HDMI players do. I compared 'Moon' on the SD290 and a NBOX (a small divx playing media box) and the nbox had a MUCH sharper picture. SD290 was ever-so-slightly blurry. This makes me think that the Samsung H1080 is probably a better machine if you are interested in upscaling DivX.

Currys are also doing these for £44.99 at the moment (without a HDMI but they are pretty cheap on ebay).

hi

my order is made now..... to be honest i do not think it will matter so much if its a "little" blurry so long as its full screen and something like ok the inlaws will be happy.

watched quite a few films that would fall into that category and in my opinion it depends on the film your watching, if there's a lot of dark scenes then yes it will be a little blurry in places, but its easily wtachable.
