Previously my brand new HD870 had firmware version: 050807.04.87iHXEXEG (found by pressing the 'info' button while the DVD Tray is open)
On another forum I found the link to this page: http://www.samsung.com/pl/products/d.../dvd_hd870.asp
By clicking on the "tutaj" link at the bottom I downloaded a file called "DVD_HD870_upgrade.zip".
This contained an ISO file "Samsung_DVD-HD870_DivX_Firmware_Upgrade_Disc_Image.iso" which contains firmware version: "030907.03.87iHXEXEG"
I burned the ISO to a CDR and put the disc in my HD870.
It lists the current and new version on screen and asks you to select 'total' (???) to continue.
It then said loading for about 2-3 minutes.
The tray then opened and I took the CDR out (seemed the right thing to do!)
After another 2-3 minutes of saying "loading" the unit turned itself off!
I turned it on and it asked me which language I wanted for the menus (Press 1 for English).
I was then able to sucessfully able to do the Multi-Region hack/fix using the (press Repeat, "No-Disc" disappear, enter: 57538, see 2, enter 9, turn off) method described in previous posts!
Please note that I had to enter the 57538 part multiple times until it displayed the "2" on screen!
I have tested with Region 2 and Region 1 discs and they both play correctly!
I do not know if there are any other issues which the newer firmware fixed (I've read reports of better remote response) but my priority was to be able to play my R1 AND R2 discs, so I'm happy.
Once a working hack/fix for the new firmware is published I may upgrade back to the latest firmware!
Hope this helps!
Cheers, DEZ
- | I had bought a Samsung HD870 in the last week and found that the region hack wouldn't work as it was impossible to get rid of the 'NO DISC' emblem. On checking the firmware I found it had the newest version so I followed yours instructions and reverted the DVD back to the earlier version of firmware and the region hack then worked a treat. Many thanks for the information it has now enabled me to play my region 1 DVD's as well as my region 2's.

- | Hello!
I followed your lead til the opening of the tray after putting on the old firmware. Before i could put out the cd with the firmware the tray closed again and started to load again.
Then the system seemed to be frozen, so i unplugged the power. Now I cannot get any power back!! The player stays without any signs of power like the operating light. This is weird...
Anyone any idea?

Referring back to the firmware downgrade instructions: dgcorp's instructions said that, once the firmware CD had been inserted, the instructions said to select 'total' to continue. I got this screen, but there was no way to select 'total'. None of the remote's cursor buttons would allow me to move to the word total. Pressing both 'return' and 'cancel' produced a screen which said 'loading', and I left this running overnight. In the end, I had to power-cycle the HD870 and eject the disk while it was still in standby mode.
How did dgcorp select 'total' to get it to load the firmware?
Even more importantly, is it possible to trample over the existing firmware and get the player into a state from which it cannot recover? I'd hate to end up with a useless inanimate box!

I have the same problem as Ged. I have burnt a few discs with Nero buth the player looks like it is trying to play music files and when i burnt it as a UDF/ISO cd then can't de player read the file.
Maybe is the problem that i have a dutch computer and burnt it on region 2?
Is ther anybody they can tell me how i most fix this problem?
I had the ISO file already downloaded.
Thank you, Ben

Did someone pm you a different ISO-file?
How did you succeed?
When I enter the burnt CD with the ISO-file, this SOB Samsung player thinks it's music... This is really frustrating, so everybody who has succeeded, please help the rest of us!
I am this close (*holds index finger very close to thumb*) to throwing this piece of s*** right out the window...

Hi,
I also did multiple burns and read the contents on the PC. Each time it said ISO and yet still it was read by the 870.
I don't know if I did it any differently but one disc finally did work.
I was sure the instructions referred to a few files to burn, as my original upgrade, though this did burn with the one ISO file.
All I can say is, make sure it's the unzipped file: I am sure you have done this. Oh, and try a different burner, maybe that could be why mine worked.

Hi Ged,
Which software you had used for burning the CD?
Thanks Ben

I also used Nero, tried Express and something containing "Smart.." I think.
Try burning an "IMAGE" or "DATA", I am sorry I cannot remember which way worked, as like yourself, I had burnt a load of discs.

Please help the rest of us, good people! | It does say in the manual that you need to use a low speed when writing to disc. I've not tried mine yet, (just bought one this afternoon) but I would recommend using a 2x or 4x speed when burning.

Used a read/writable at 4x and worked fine. So no reason why others cant do the same.

Hi All
My brand new DVD-HD870/XEU arrived today from Amazon with firmware 080307.05.87iHXEXEG installed. Now I've search this entire forum and I think this is a newer firmware (can anyone tell?). Anyway I can confirm that the multi-region hack works
Pressing REPEAT made the "no disc" message disappear but then I did have to press the 57538 number sequence twice to get the number 2 to appear then I hit 9 and it now works a treat.
It's odd because I did do everything correctly once before and it did not work?
I had to wait a while for the DVD player to get shipped so I wonder if Samsung has shipped a new batch with updated firmware?
Cheers
KableMan

Can also confirm that the firmware hack does work for the Samsung DVD-HD870 as described by Dez. I used Instant CD/DVD to burn the ISO image onto a CD-RW at 4x speed. The DVD player read it fine and there are instructions on screen to follow with regard to the firmware loading process.
With regard to typing in the number 5-7-5-3-8, I only had to do this once. I think you just have to make sure the remote is pointing directly at the DVD player, close up, and that you press the buttons firmly. Sounds simple enough, but the remote is quite poor as it is not particularly responsive.

Hi everybody. I just did it for region 4 (Brazil) for a brand new HD870 bought here. It took no more than 30 seconds and is working fine for region 4 and 1 and copied dvds.

KableMan | nah fella the latest firmware which is causing the issues is 'ver.050807.04.87' - whatever you do, don't get tempted to upgrade to it!
