Panasonic DVD player/recorder DRM E50- problem with remote control

For the past few days the remote control for my DVD player has stopped working.
Regardless of which button I press the following message flashes on the DVD player panel 'Remote DVD 1'. It stays for a few seconds and disappears until I try using the remote control again.

Any ideas on what to do to get it working again? I suspect my kid must have tried using it while I wasn't around...

Press and hold the Numeric '1' key whilst holding the Enter key, holding them both depressed for about 5 seconds.

Job done.

In the instructions somewhere.

Thank you so much for your help, I knew it would be something obvious yet impossible to work out without instructions (which disappeared a few years ago while we were moving).
