What meter is best?

One of the most common questions we get asked is what meter should I be using to calibrate my TV, so I thought I would cover some of the basics here:

These are now out of production, so care should be taken ordering a new meter, as it is likely to have been sitting around in a warehouse.

This is datacolors primary meter, and comes in 4 forms Express, TV, Pro & Elite. The differences being the software provided.

What is a dynamic iris, ANSI, and on/off contrast?

Within the projector world, people after talk about a dynamic iris and contrast ratios, so this blog is to try and explain what is meant by these terms:

Contrast

On/off contrast is the difference between the lowest black and highest (calibrated) white that a display can show in any 2 frames. This is usually shown as a ratio, i.e. 1:5000.

Setting Contrast on a display

Setting the contrast, is made up of two steps.

1. The first step is to use the contrast pattern (see below), and lower the contrast (after selecting the contrast bar in the picture menu, as shown above and then press left on the remote). Start by setting white-level very low so you can easily see the bars flash. Ideally you would want to see all the numbered bars 223-253 flash on these two patterns at a low setting, but in some situations the bars numbered 235-253 may never flash....
