Purchased some adidas Beckenbaur's from JD last weekend. They are really nice; white with brown stripes. Anyway squeak squeak squeak. Was it a bath toy or a mouse? Turned out to be the leather around the lace holes rubbing against the tongue of the shoes! Tried wearing them in for a few days to no avail. Never had the issue before and so hit the internet. A casual Google later and got to rubbing lotion into the leather... small circular motion... working it in deep... et voila! Problem solved

Moral:
Believe everything you read on the internet. Unconditionally.

Dumped Firefox, little ram hogger that it is

And I do mostly luv Chrome. Fast. Blazingly fast. Extensions and Apps very neatly integrated into the UI. I cannot get enough of the NYT App. And did I mention that it is fast?

One current minus is that for some inexplicable reason Chrome does not acknowledge my Logitech MX Revolution mouse's wheel button -> middle click. I have reassigned middle click to another button for now but hoping for a fix somewhere :(

Also no default live rss feeds bookmarking like in Firefox, have installed a third party extension to get round that but it really should be something Google have by default

Update: Fixed the middle click with wheel button issue. Turns out I had to alter Chrome setting so wheel is always in "free" mode. Coolio

Lesson learned yesterday - opt into the freebie before putting a £10 top-up on

I got a free sim off Vodafone website, choosing option where a £10 top-up = 60 free international minutes. In an epic fail on my part I stupidly did not follow the instructions properly and topped up before opting into the freebee. Damn. Now I have £10 of Vodafone credit with no freebee. What a loser

Well I still have a pre-paid £10 Virgin sim that I got with my cheap Alcatel £10 handset from CPW that I need to use and abuse. So can hold off on potentially loading £20 onto a Vodafone sim I will dispose of in March :suicide:

1x birthday card

1x Christmas card

Before anyone says the items are to be posted via international post and next week I would have had no time to go out shopping for them due to GT5
Anyway, we arrive at the entire point for the blog entry. On the back of the birthday card are the words
"Handmade for happiness" :)

Bemoaning the business model of the gaming industry in 2010 - both sides of the fence

When I was young a new game software release meant you was getting the full experience, or as close to it pending publisher pressure, as the developer intended. If sales proved to be successful then you received an expansion pack at 50% of the usual retail cost for the full game. Nowadays with the emergence of paid for download content, sadly only a small minority of developers and publishers hold true to the old ways. Now you will typically get a short main game with extra content to be released later which of course will cost you. It all adds up. Sometimes the excuse is a thriving multi-player but still it saves development cost to shorten the main game in itself. Too many developers, maybe from pressure being exerted by their publisher are succumbing to the temptation to release a shorter and smaller title and worry about sprinkling extras later (for a cost).

This continued squeezing of margins has conversely led to a sense of entitlement amongst some consumers. In the modern internet connected world people expect that all-encompassing multi-player without the attached cost. Because running servers and hosting games do not cost any money. You would not buy a car and never have to pay towards future running costs. Free petrol for life?

This sense of self-entitlement is of course greatest in the unashamed software pirate. True that the console manufacturers are good in having new ways to combat the problem like mandatory firmware updates and methods of detecting such persons on servers and banning them. For every "jailbreaker" (a more affectionate term signalling the desire to unlock useful functionality and the ability to backup purchases), you will have another ten people examining just how to get that torrent download playable

On a closing note once upon a time we played on games that came on cartridges. Great days. Game not working? Fuzzy image? Blow the game cartridge, give the console a soft whack and you was good to go again. None of these disc laser errors, failing hard drives, or too many powerful components in too small a space resulting in a melting failure and an error message (if you are lucky to see something on the display). Good times
