Bitstream HD Audio, Profiles and the Format Spat

OK, this is a blog so I can be a bit more contentious no?

I'm fed up with people who berate Blu-ray for not having PiP, profile 1.1, profile 2.0 etc. and then in the next sentence say they prefer their HD-DVD player of choice because they can listen to the audio in bitstream mode.

If you think bitstream audio is the best thing since sliced bread then a Blu-ray profile 1.0 player with bitstream capability is perfect for you. With either Blu or Red, if you use bitstream...

Am I mad? Probably, however, hear me out.

I watched Pulse at the weekend, and actually did so through my Blu-ray player, not because I think it's a great upscaling wonder of the world (it isn't), but because unlike my Denon DVD2900 it passes the 640Kbps DD track correctly to my processor...

Anyway, it really got me to thinking because the picture is dreadful. It's not dreadful though because it's SD, it's bad because it's riddled with compression artifacts, blocking,...

Growing tired of the Format Spat

It's almost two years since HD-DVD launched and it feels like an episode of ever decreasing circles now...

Dual format players are not the norm and are far from it. As some of us predicted, they have so far proven to be too complicated to get working properly. The 3 efforts so far have probably delivered the 3 worst HD-DVD players (by quite some margin) and likewise the 3 worst BD players, by a much smaller margin.

My own preference from the outset was...
