9700 due Monday, what should i have installed?

Hi all,

As my title suggests i am going to be a Bold 9700 owner on Monday. Having been following this forum i wish to ask the people who own one what should i be looking to have installed and set up.

Firstly, i take it i can sync all my contacts from my sim?
Secondly, can i customise the phone to have my own ringtones sms alert, email alert wallpaper, theme etc?
Thirdly, what apps are a MUST to download? I would like Tapatalk as i like to use this forum!!
Fourthly, what OS should the phone be on 5.0? The phone is coming from O2.
Lastly, can i set up both my gmail and yahoo mail accounts or just the one?

Any other advice that users wish to pass on then my thanks button is ready and waiting

I just transferred contacts from my SIM in a Nokia 6300 no problem; I am ceasing use of the Nokia (which I was using purely as a phone with Vodafone) and have retired my old Blackberry 8700g (which was used 99.9% for emails and was with T-mobile on a BES contract).
I saved all contacts etc. to the Vodafone SIM before putting it in the new Blackberry 9700. I also saved all wanted files (MP3, midi etc.) to the SD card in the Nokia using the Nokia PC software.
The transition went without any issues.
There's a fair amount of customisation available on the 9700. You can also download the 9700 user manual in advance.
There's a great little interactive 9700 guide here:
http://www.selflearning.co.uk/vodafo...y-9700-faq.swf

You could also download and install the latest Blackberry Desktop Manager software beforehand.
I recommend Mini Opera rather than the native Blackberry web browser.
My OS is now v5.0.0.545 (Platform 5.1.0.140) whatever that means. It got upgraded automagically when I "registered" the 9700 with Blackberry DTM.
You can certainly arrange multiple email accounts with BIS (the normal consumer setup rather than BES that I have for business).
You might also want to surf the Crackberry and Pinstack forums.

Chris, that's a great help. Will have a thorough look at that Vodafone guide over the weekend and download the latest Blackberry software.

Thanks for taking the time to post.

1) Stick all your contacts on your sim then copy it to the phone memory. Takes 1 minute.

2) EVERYTHING is highly customizable on the blackberry. I was impressed, ive been using ther 9700 and it hasn't let me down. Can't fault it except for the headphones not ringing when their plugged in. It's an issue with the 9700's software... hopefully an update coming soon. Otherwise yeh.. you can set ringtones and vibrations for everything, an MSN alert, a MSN new message, a BBPin new message or new conversation, and each profile has its own settings.. its brilliantly tedius.

3) I keep my phone clutter-free so I have a few GOOD apps, nothing rubbish.
1) Don't get the facebook app, its a pain in the ass to remove, the mobile version is better/faster imo.
2) Download POYNT - its good for finding restaurants in london, or businesses, movies, and shops.
3) Download ORANGE MAPS for free (comes with sat nav for drivign and walking) if you're on orange and on a £30 tariff.
4) TubeBuddy - good for checkign the status of Underground tube lines and trains.. pretty detailed.
5) TIME the magazine - good for reading on the tube as it preloads a lot of content!
6) Bloomberg Mobile - great information and news, charts and analysis.
7) Engadget Mobile - great little gadget for the Blackberry, runs very nicely and presentation is cool..

Of course this list is tailored to me, but I think these apps are great for anyone and everyone. There's plenty others to choose some, many aren't worth the hassel and a handful don't work either. Get playing,, and dont forget to install Blackberry Desktop manager and backup / update your phone as you go!

Hi mate- why do you advise not to download the fb app? does it cause problems on the bb? I am getting the 9700 on tues so this would be good to know.

also what does IMO mean? I have seen that phrase used a lot and not knowing what it means (sorry if this sounds like a dumb question)

I am on the T-Mobile network but am getting the unlocked 9700- so what should I do before I get the phoine so that I am prepared?

Thanks again for your help

I've not experienced any problems with the Facebook app yet.

Also, IMO - In My Opinion.

Facebook works a treat for me too. I hate Facebook, but some people insist on using it to contact me so it's handy to have and so far, no problems and works very well.
