My IT guys are telling me the handset needs BES activation, CPW 02 are telling me they dont offer BES but their technical dept. say they do. Spent several hours now both on the phone and in store and coming up against a brick wall. Doesn't help that I'm on a business contract so have to deal over the phone as they stores can't set up or deal with these business contract issues!!

All I want is my emails synched with my desktopwhen I'm away from the office.

CPW are correct, they cant offer BES. BES is a server that your company own, nothing to do with CPW or the network your on.

Are you sure its not BIS your after ?

We have the Blackberry Server but the handset does not give you the option of selecting BES rather than BIS. They do on O2 handsets (for £28/month !!!!) and T mobile for £7/month but CPW O2 apparently don't even have it as an option. Guess I'll have to stick with BIS which isn't ideal .

BES is something your company would have internally, something they manage their self as part of a corporate Blackberry solution.

BIS is something your network operator provide for individual use.

So if your company hand out Blackberrys and support BES, your IT department need to help you get connected. There is nothing your network operator can do to help.

But I have a suspicion this is not the case and your IT department have given you confusing messages.

So, if you are looking for a personal Blackberry solution ask O2 about BIS.

If it's a company provided solution hosted internally by your IT department, they need to help you get connected to their own BES.

I think your majorly confused with all this mate.

If your company has a BES they can add your blackberry's pin to one of their user groups and that will connect it. They can then administer the handset remotely.

Not half

It's my IT guys (not in-house) that are telling me that if the handset has the 'set up/enable BES' option then they can sort the rest out.

Making do with BIS for now which is OK to be honest however whilst I can delete emails from the phone with the option to delete from Mailbox as well, emails deleted on my computer are still present on the BB, can I change settings somewhere to overcome this?

Been digging into this a bit more for you and spoke to a contact at blackberry.

There are essentially 2 types of each handset, one is prosumer, the other enterprise. You can essentially use both on BIS and BES but for the least work the Prosumer should be sold for BIS and Enterprise for BES.

In options and setup what icons are there ?

Also you could delete all the service books (options, advanced options, service books, blackberry button then delete) and get O2 to remove BIS from your account and resend the relevant BES ones.

In setup there are 5 icons: Setup Wizard, Set Up Wi-Fi, Email Settings, Set Up Bluetooth & 02.

I can't speak to O2 customer services because i'm a CPW O2 Customer which is apparently different to O2 direct and CPW customer services haven't got a clue!

I seem to have all my mail coming through now (set up using Outlook Remote Server) but the only bugbear is that emails deleted on my outlook remain on the BB but emails deleted on the BB are deleted from my desktop. If I could solve this then everything would be rosy

There should be an option in your advanced settings as to which takes or priority; ISTR on my 8700g the options include items like "Blackberry wins".

under Email Reconciliation I have 3 fields:-

1.Delete On:Handheld or Mailbox & Handheld or Prompt: Set to Prompt.

2.Wireless Reconcile: On or Off: Set to On

3. On Conflicts: Handheld Wins or Mailbox Wins: Set to Mailbox Wins

I've played around with these settings but still can't delete of BB from my desktop no matter which setting I try.

to get your device setup on bes, speak with your IT guys, and do the following:

go into options, advanced options, enterprise activation.

once in there, enter your email address that is setup on your corporate email environment, and then the password that your it guys who administer your BES have provided to you to connect to the server, then press the trackpad or blackberry button, and select 'Activate'

should be job done, and take about half an hour for all the settings etc to come down.

i'd be tempted to wipe the device and restore the factory settings if you can.

if you have the desktop manager installed, you can backup all your settings and stuff first so you dont loose them

CPW wont support Enterprise Express, it's still an internally hosted function that your IT department will need to assist with. It's just a more cost effective version of BES for companies who don't need some of the more advanced BES features (like HA, the majority of the security policies etc).

Not sure I fully understand, are you saying that I can use the BESX or not. I have everything downloaded to my company server (supplied FOC by RIM) but my IT guys say I still need the handset enabling which is where they tell me the problem lies.

whatever happens, and whoever hosts the bes you are trying to connect too, you still need the option on the handheld to activate on an enterprise (BES)

there are some settings on your device that are not there, these may have been removed when you configured your email initially.

you need to get the option i spoke about, under advanced options, called enterprise activation. only then can you enter the details your it guys give you, and connect to your company BES.

can you wipe the device completely, and set it up from scratch?

wiping the device completely is a possibility as I have it backed up on my desktop manager, is it easy to do and then set up from scratch?
