Confusion for a possible new blackberry owner!

Hi all

I am thinking of getting a Blackberry bold 9700, i think they look great and would really suit all my needs etc

I am confused about this blackberry data package, do i need it, whats it for, why does it cost me and what can't i do without it!?

I mean looking around a price plans I am looking to pay £35 a month,18 month contract, unlimited push email & free bold 9700 then i have to pay an extra £5-10 pound a month for unlimited internet totaling £40-45 I can only really or only want to go to £35 a month maximum

Is this unlimited push email the data package

any advice greatly appreciated!

Alfie

Depends on the operator but whichever one you go for, that's a rubbish deal they're offering you mate.

Blackberry email (sometimes called Blackberry data package) gives you the push email bit. Blackberry Internet (confusingly, also sometimes called Blackberry data package) gives you unlimited Internet access but not necessarily push email. Like I said, depends on the operator, they don't even know what it is themselves half of the time

You can very easily get something like 300 anytime mins + 300 sms + unlimited Internet + unlimited Blackberry email for less than 20 quid a month on a contract.

You quite clearly have no clue what your talking about!

You get data/internet packages on all networks which generally cost £5-£10. These allow use of data on a handset without incurring costs. You then get BIS (Blackberry Internet Service), this is the service which allows you to use PIN messaging and push email. Some blackberry's will not allow any data use without this package on the account.

Disagree, *you* Sir clearly have no idea what you're talking about telling me I've no clue what I'm talking about

Orange for example offer Blackberry Email which is the push email and is different from Internet which is just the Internet package for web access. I should know, I used to contract for these muppets in Bristol

I think Orange call it Blackberry Email these days which costs a fiver and the Internet thing is called Mobile Browsing that costs 8 quid. Other operators used to have similar confusing naming conventions.

To the OP, to get the best deal call up Orange Retentions and ask for your PAC rather than upgrades, the retentions people have The Power to offer you good deals so getting 20 quid all in + 50 quid for handset won't be too difficult.

Ring Orange up mate, I went from PAYG to a Bold 9700 on Panther, managed to get 800mins, unlimited txts, email, internet etc, all for £20pm, only downside is the 24m contract, but Ive been using BlackBerrys for around 2 years now and nothing comes close.....

Unfortunately its yourself thats misinformed on this matter. I work for a network and liase with RIM on a current projects.

If you've got a blackberry and use it for email (or data at all like MMS or web browsing on some models) you need a Blackberry service on the account. This can be BES, generally for SME's and Larger corporations, BIS which is generally for small companies or individuals or the lesser used BPS for users looking for administrator control without the cost of an Enterprise server.

Networks supplying to consumers sell BIS, this is what gets you your push email/pin messaging, this service is managed by RIM. Networks also sell data packages which cover the data used when browsing the web or using media apps like youtube for example.

Regardless what the networks choose to name it this is how it works.

You two are arguing with each other but saying the same thing.

D_G has said that you need an 'email package' to get your email and an 'internet thing' to cover internet data usage.

Sy' has said you need 'BIS/BES' to get your email and a 'data package' to cover data usage.

I'm pretty sure that 'email package' = 'BIS/BES' and I'm pretty sure 'internet thing' = 'data package'

Now kiss and make up

Ha ha ha all this banter. Does it matter what its called.. just ring orange and tell them what you want.

I am with orange, 600mins unlimited text, unlimited internet and blackberry push email...£22 pm 18 months.

Orange are the best, i agree with London town, its worth giving them a ring.

edit.. and the phone was free

The fact of the matter is though that you could have a blackberry with a 'internet thing' and not be able to go on the internet as some models will not allow any data use without a BIS/BES subscription.

phones for you was the best i found for the 8520, they offered me the phone for free, 400mins, unlimited internet (all the features work, like push email etc) and texts on orange for £25ppm. Also, they gave me £30 for my old phone, and gave me cash to pay off the last 2 months of my o2 contract, and a manager gave me a tenner for coming back the same day

went to the orange shop and was amazed by the 2 people I showed the quote; one looked at it, laughed and walked off, then another said 'we can do the deal, but not the cash back for the phone and contract' and didnt even attempt to sell me anything better. oh well.

anyway, go to the highstreet, get some quotes, they're all trying to beat eachother for your business so play them off one and other and you're sure to get a good deal somewhere.

good luck
