Welcome to the forum

He won't get push email, I don't think he will be able to use any apps either, but it should work for calls and SMS fine, fairly sure mobile internet would work too but I'm not sure.

Internet on blackberry's without BIS/BES officially shouldnt work and often doesnt.

You can add the blackberry internet service for £7.50 a month, you may get away with adding the committed booster for £5 a month though.

thanks , myself I can't see the point of getting one if you cannot get the total service especially if the internet is not going to work; it may be back to the drawing board. Also over enthusiastic selling techniques by CFW ( Oh just buy the Orange phone and put the T mob sim in simple !! All our phones are unlocked !!)mmmmmmmmm

I was just going to post a question here and saw your thread asking exactly what I wanted. I've got the T-Mobile Solo Fixed 20 SIM that my son uses in a Samsung Tocco Light. He wants to change to the BB 8520 and I have received various answers today.

First port of call was CPW who said: "You won't be able to use Internet or Wi-Fi unless you subscribe to BlackBerry Internet Services" Wow, and people say the iPhone is a communist state!

Next stop was the local T-mobile shop and the only person I could talk to was a Saturday girl who almost said "computer says no" but admitted she didn't know and suggested I call T-Mobile. So I did.

T-Mobile said I WILL be able to use the internet as my SIM has that allowance but I won't get the BB email, that's not a problem as my son is 16 and never uses email. All he will want to do is call, text, Facebook and web browsing. I did a google search for 'Facebook BlackBerry App' and it looks as if you can easily download it direct to the BB.

Now, if I believe T-Mobile then he'll get all that but if I believe CPW all he'll get is calls and texts. I'm totally new to BB's (iPhone user you see), can any of you BB experts clarify what is and isn't possible.

Many thanks in advance (hopefully)

Fisher

I would go even further than Sy1441, its almost certain that he won't be able to use the web/email/messeger/facebook etc. Blackberries are different from other handsets and really need a subscription to BIS.

(The reason I say almost certain is that some third party apps will work with T-Mobiles own internet package. It is also sometimes possible to do trick a Blackberry to make it work)

If it was me, I would either subscribe to BIS or go for something like a Nokia E71/E72 (or similar) which will offer full push email/internet/facebook/messaging/media with no extra subscriptions.

I work for T-Mobile and currently have in my possession

A 8900 without BIS/BES with WnW - It doesn't let me browse the internet
A 8900 without BIS/BES with WnW - It DOES allow me to browse the internet

God only knows why one works and not the other but i've seen it a hundred times.

Official line is that all Blackberries we sell "must" be sold with BIS as without it all the features of the phone wont work, picture messaging wont for a start.

Web browsing over wi-fi still works without BIS/BES though.

The conclusion for my problem was to scrap the idea of the t mob deal ; as she was mad keen on the Blackberry 8520 and I couldnt find another phone she liked as much! Even if it did work I was going to have to fork out £200 on a phone; so i spoke with our existing provider ( she is on my account) even tho i had cancelled her phone and was working thro the 30 days. They gave her the phone( or will do as i have it hidden away for xmas!!) on a 18 month deal for £25 that was for 600 mins unltd txt ,unltd net and including the blackberry bit. They also put a £20 limit on any excess she may incur ; but to be honest I don,t think there will be any ;its the txting ;she went 500 over on her last 1000 txt deal when she split with her boyfriend hence £50 plus bill

The only condition was that I also upgrade(i was due end of last month) so I am now the very proud owner of an HTC Tattoo; which is great ;also for £25 for 300 mins unltd txt ,unltd net and again for 18 months
trouble is she likes The Tat !!

You can get the 8520 on T-Mobile with 300 Mins, Unlimited Texts and Blackberry Services for £20 which is pretty good i reckon. Your deal seems to be a good option for more minutes also.

Just an update for you guys. I bought the 8520 from CPW on Orange PAYG. We've dropped our son's T-Mobile Solo Fixed 20 SIM in and all is good.

He is able to call and text as before and has Internet access, Facebook and MSM via both our wireless network and the T-Mobile network. Initially he couldn't get MSN but it turned out I had a block on "that sort of thing" from a couple of years ago and as soon as I lifted the block all was good.

The only thing he hasn't tried is setting up email but he hardly ever uses email anyway. I will get him to try setting it up just so I can report back on it.

Just to clarify, I have not signed up for any of the Blackberry Services.

Cheers

Fisher

Also can i get just the blackberry email as i already have the web n walk unlimited or do i need to take the blackberry email + internet service.

I'm sure you were hoping one of the more knowledgeable members would reply but I'll have a go ;-).

You say you just want the BlackBerry email, is there a reason you have to have it? can't you use a web email address? or do you want the functionality of push (or whatever BB call it) email?

I guess that's the only choice on the BB platform. I know on my iPhone I can get Push on my Yahoo address and I think GMail have added Push.

I hadn't really looked at Blackberry until my son wanted one and it just seems mad that you have to pay for an email service these days!

I'd be interested to know how you get on. Good luck with T-Mobile and I hope you get a deal out of them.

Phoned up t-mobile today once i received the blackberry and for £5 a month ( 12 month contract) i get all the blackberry internet services except internet. It would have been £7.50 a month if i wanted the no contract. And this did not include the internet im not sure but i think it would have costed £10 a month but i already had the unlimited web n walk so i was fine with that.
