Question about Blackberrys on O2 contract

Hi all,

I'm on an 18 month contract with 02 and am about 8 months in but I have decided that a smartphone will keep me organised better (my Tocco does an OK job but doesn't really cut it).

I asked O2 about upgrading my phone and they were having none of it, I'd have to buy out the rest of my contract and start another one, which isn't going to happen!

I'm thinking about getting a 2nd hand Blackberry of some kind to use with my SIM, but I've heard they use their own system for internet and email. I already have the regular unlimited internet bolt on, will this give me all the push email and internet features or will I have to get something else as well?

Wow I can ramble on a bit!

TIA for any help

You'll not get push email with your current sim. You can call O2 and add it to your account for £5 a month.

Really?

My cousin was in exactly the same situation but they're charging him £10/month.

The sim does not need to be changed, but just make sure the second hand blackberry you do buy has an unlocked pin.

Re: Question about Blackberrys on O2 contract

Two months ago I had a Nokia E75 Contract, I got bored of the phone as it had no good features so I bought a BlackBerry Bold 9000, I could not use the services so I rang 02 and they said they will be charging me £10 extra a month for the blackberry services which you could use for the internet, messaging and others and you can cancel that add on whenever incase you end up going back to a simple phone. To be hounest £10 extra month is worth it for BlackBerry Services on 02 if you are going to use it most of the time.

Solid Mafia, did you have a bolt-on on your contract already? I'm ideally wanting to swap my regular unlimited internet bolt -on for the BB one, I know you are able to swap between normal bolt-ons every 90 days, not sure if this applies to the BB one or not though?

Hey, I also had a unlimited ineternet bold on, but they will not allow you swapping it around, you will have to pay £10 extra a month as its a blackberry service bolt on.

Re: Question about Blackberrys on O2 contract

Ah OK, I was told by the guy in the shop I could swap it over, might have to go back to the shop and complain if they won't do it on the phone. If I speak to the guy I saw before then he might be able to sort it out, especially if I kick up a stink

Re: Question about Blackberrys on O2 contract

If you have a contract with the unlimited data bolt on, you could try changing that for unlimited BIS, I know I did it at renewal but I have heard of them allowing it on the iphone tariff so you might get lucky?

Re: Question about Blackberrys on O2 contract

Woo! Just got back from town and not only did Vodafone unlock my new 8700 for free, o2 then swapped my bolt on with no problems and for free :D

Shows the value of speaking to someone face to face, as I was told by email that I would have to be a Voda customer for them to unlock my phone, and then that they might charge £19.99 for doing so.

Swapping the bolt-on was fine but remember the blackberry bolt-on doesnt give any data outside push email / blackberry messenger / app store. Any web browsing you do would be chargeable.

:o Craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaap.

By app store does that include the use of apps? I've got google sync handling my contacts and calendars, downloaded the facebook app and have been randomly browsing the web. Would all this be chargeable?

EDIT: I got worried when I read the above post from Sy1441 so went online and checked my current bill. I have not been charged for any of my data use, either through wap.o2.co.uk or blackberry.net, so I think I am fine, but will keep checking up on it to be sure.

For reference, the bolt on I am on is called "BlackBerry - Unlimited"

Re: Question about Blackberrys on O2 contract

It becomes fun when you tether the BB to your pc/mac.

Re: Question about Blackberrys on O2 contract

Cheers, less panicky (sp?) now as I can only just about afford the £19.57/month I'm paying at the moment, wouldn't want a hefty data bill on top of that from playing with my new toy!
