Bedroom Wardrobe intergated LCD

Hi guys...

I'm in the planning process of my AV setup in my bedroom and I'm trying to find out if any of you know of suppliers of veneered MDF or Chipboard (Oak style).

I'm building a custom wardrobe and need 6 boards to use as the back and sides of the two wardrobes either side of the TV. I've been to B&Q & Homebase but the biggest they supply is 2440mm x 610mm. I need around 2600mm x 710mm...

I've attached a picture to give you an idea of what I'm looking for.

Any ideas....? Thank in advance.

I think you'll find the biggest available sizes are 2440 x 1220 (thats 8' x 4' in old money). You'll have to join them.

Re: Bedroom Wardrobe intergated LCD

Apart from the grain in the veneer not matching, which I can live with.

Is there any tips you could give on joining two ends together. Would you get away with just drilling some deep holes in both pieces and using metal doweling and glue to slot the ends together. Sorry if that doesn't make sense.

You can get larger sizes of MDF, I've used 10 Foot x 5 Foot before, although I laminated it myself, Laminate comes in 10 Foot sheets too, but it can be expensive.

"Oversized MDF boards are available up to 1830 x 3660 (6 foot x 12 foot). Not all thicknesses are available in the oversized board sizes"

Did you find it fairly straight forward veneering the wood yourself?

Thanks for the links guys!

Hiya, apologies for the delay, yes it was pretty simple, I cut the MDF to the exact sizes I needed, and then cut the laminate slightly bigger, trimming it off with a Dremel, I did try a router to trim it, but felt I needed more practice, I made a plinth and backboard for a fire surround, if I can find my camera later I'll post a couple of pics of the end result, I just used standard contact adhesive (Bostik I think) and had no problems at all, just followed the instructions on the can then used a decorators seam roller to put some pressure on it, followed by placing another board over the laminate with some breeze blocks to keep it flat, its stayed stuck to the MDF for about 5 years now. Laminating the edges can be a little tricky, but with a bit of patience acceptable results can be achieved.

No worries for the delay, I'm happy to wait for sound advise like this....sounds good and do-able mate...

If don't mind me asking, (or can even remember ) where did you get the laminate from? I would imagine that you get what you pay for, quality wise.

Thanks again

Re: Bedroom Wardrobe intergated LCD

Looks like a fun project.
Wood Veneer UK - supplier of exotic, burr and decorative veneer though they may not have single sheets that large.
The trick with veneer is 1 don't have it too thin, and 2 spread the glue thinly and most important evenly. Then as Shared4 says cover it and weight it down.
As for edging you can veneer (which is a real pain), use Iron on edging strips (sounds bad but can give pretty good results) or use real wood edging about 5mm thick (lots of clamping but excellent results and more resistant to damage).
If you have to join the MDF best to use a biscuit jointer and water based wood glue. They can be hired and biscuits bought for a few £s. Much more accurate than trying to drill and dowel.

Good advise about joining the wood, thanks...I'm getting the DIY bug more and more...but have never done anything like this so cheers for the info...

If the veneer is pre-glued, I take it's just a case of using the iron to get it to stick? Is this maybe a better option?
