Re: ikea - Lack TV bench

I checked it out and you can forget to fit a decent amp in there.

Re: ikea - Lack TV bench

thanks for your response, I thought I would have to modify the bench to accommodate my amp and centre speaker.
Plan is to buy two, and cut down the benches to my own size, present length just to long for the wall the benches are going to rest against.
Plan again is to use my table saw to shorten the board length & depth, and increase the height clearance to fit my six components.
One bench on top of the other, ie. dowel & glued together should look cool, I also plan to use my own aluminium legs that I've just purchased.

see link ..

Centre picture.

Finally, do the legs supplied, come permanently fixed to the underside board, or do they attach to the underside board by other means.

thanks

Hi Ewoody

Legs are separate and are screwed onto the bottom

Question Re: ikea - Lack TV bench

I'm curious as to how this project has worked out for you. My issue is that my center speaker is 7.5" tall, while there is only 6" of space on the shelf (special thanks to Ikea customer service, who responded to my inquiry as to whether I could fit the 7.5" speaker by informing me that the shelf is 9.25" -- except that's from the outside of the top to the outside of the bottom and does not accurately represent how much space there is in the shelf!).

I've been considering three options here:

1. Take a power saw and cut out 1.5" of the top and bottom of the shelf in order to accommodate the speaker -- but I'm concerned because this is Ikea furniture made of particle board, rather than solid wood...and I'd imagine it would be quite messy, questionably stable, questionable appearance;

2. Put something under the legs to make the unit itself taller by a few inches and rig some kind of cradle to suspend the speaker from the bottom of the shelf;

3. Return the shelf to Ikea and try to find something new.

Would rather not resort to #3 -- any luck with what you've been doing? Any advice to offer?
