Wooden stand vs Glass

I see most people here have the black/see-through glass stands for their plasmas/LCDs. Is there any advantage to having this over a traditional wooden one?

I find the glass ones very "cold" looking but I'm suprised by how many people seem to have them.

Just wondered if I was missing something. There does seem to be a huge amount of choice of them though...

Re: Wooden stand vs Glass

I've had a 3 tier clear glass stand in the past and have a 'dark one' now.

I think it comes down to style. The kit that goes on these stands are often gloss or matt black in colour and these kind of 'dark' glass stands complement them due to their colour and the metal legs/columns that thses stands have. Putting the av kit on a stand of this type makes it look very contemporary and modern. Stands like this look 'new' and go hand in hand with the technology that is stored on them.

Saying that I think it looks good when a contrast is applied such as wood as this can look effective against the black/silver plastic. (I'm currently looking for a dakota mango TV bench).

I personally think the big disadvantage of glass stands are fingerrprints and dust. In the experience I've had I've had to wipe down my glass stands regularly due to dust and fingerprints.

At the end of the day it often comes down to personal preference and what other furniture you've got in your room.

It was £170 from Argos and is the same colour as my other furniture. It's delivered already built, so will see if it is of a good standard as I went furniture shopping today and you can get very good quality units for the money I'm spending, nice and heavy, good quality stuff.

I've measured it all up, plus it's got storage for my dvd's (I only have about £20). Plus my SKY+ and DVD player (which I need to buy) will fit nicely.

Now then, just need to buy the TV now (Panasonic TH42PX80B).

Re: Wooden stand vs Glass

Looks like a good choice.

Like I said in my post I'm looking for a wooden bench similar to this.

Yours looks sturdy, has got plenty of storage and as you said matches your existing furniture.

Glass vs wood? Who cares?

Enjoy your new stand
