Question about glass TV stand supports

Just bought myself a new glass tv stand, one problem is my HTPC won't fit on the bottom shelf due to the cable tidy/middle support.

My old stand was smaller and had a removable cable tidy so it fit just fine.

Stand in question is Serano SB1050 (from currys) with a maximum weight of 120kg and width is 105cm

I worked out that I can still have a support between the middle and top shelf no problem and remove the bottom one.

Equipment Top shelf:
Samsung LE40M87
ipod dock

Middle shelf:
Xbox 360
Centre speaker (about 1kg max)
Technics hifi (again not that heavy)

Bottom shelf:
HTPC (around 10kg at a guess)

Question is how safe will it be?

Re: Question about glass TV stand supports

No problem whatsoever mate.
Your telly is only 21Kg.
My telly is 50Kg and then I've got similar kit to you too.
And I've stood on it at the same time

Probably not recommended really

That's well within limits

Re: Question about glass TV stand supports

I have tested it without any of the supports in the middle and it worked fine.
Didn't try anything but my 40" lcd on it but it seemed fine.

In the end I just put the support between the top and middle shelf and left the bottom one without the support and its been fine for months.

Hope it helps!

Re: Question about glass TV stand supports

I am still looking for a cheapish glass/metal stand (typically Argos or M&S) to set off my TV and ancilliaries but nearly all of them are too tall, i.e about 20" in height.
Does anyone know what the general construction of these stands is and whether the vertical components and cosmetic cylindrical covers can be tailored to one's needs?
Are there, for instance, threaded members inside each leg which can be reduced by sawing etc.
Obviously a bit of work would need to be done, provided this was possible.

However I wouldn't want to ruin something costing £100 or thereabouts.

Re: Question about glass TV stand supports

On my last 2 stands the large metal poles inbetween the glass are around 5-7cm diameter which I guess could be cut down quite easily depending on how good your metal working skills are.

The main problem would be the rods inside which hold everything together. As there usually one long rod which just has threaded ends about 2" at each end.

Guess you could get the threaded rod from somewhere like b&q, it looks to be around m5 or m6 sizes.

My main concern would be getting the large metal poles to have a good finish

Thanks. I had perhaps, naively assumed that they might be threaded over their entire length (which would be stupid, expensive and unnecessary, I suppose).

I'd really like a stand to be no higher than, say, 18" (45cms) and would need to remove about 4", typically, from those I have seen.

My LCD telly and two DVD recorders are currently standing on a black MDF stand, which was an integral part of my old CRT Sony Trinitron TV.
This does not look quite the part, even though it can be moved out of the corner, easily, for hoovering etc. (which would be a difficult procedure with some of the heavy glass stands out there).

Re: Question about glass TV stand supports

Does anyone know of any glass stands that are adjustable for overall height such that I could achieve a stand with a maximum height (from the floor) of, say, about 16/18"?
