Thanks: Gave 5, Got 5 | best way on running 5.1 speaker wires around a room?
Hi guys, will be moving house soon and the area where my set up (SEE MY SIG BELOW) will be lokks like I'll have problems in hiding the wires.
Hows best to do it?
I'll still use the IKEA speaker stands for the DENON 5.1 speakers Left/Right front speakers, BUT not ure what to do with the rear L/R speakers.
the floors before are wooden and I can feed wires under the floor then back up to the speaker stand at the rear.
Or another option is to mountthe rear speakers on wall mounts.. but where do I go with the wires, not wanting to see wires running up newly painted/plastered walls.
how does everyone else get round the problem?
pic isn't that clear but you'll get the idea,
Its two rooms now made into one, so one half will be TV against the back wall, you can just make it out, front L/R speakers not a problem, its where we have the door that you see is where the rear right speaker would noramally go, so its not coming into the other half of the room (where you can make out the RSJ is over the ceiling)
where do you put them?
sorry to waffle on

If you still have no skirting board, then I would say that is the best bet and it looks from the photos that you have the ideal recess to run the cables in. Depending on the construction of the wall, it should be pretty easy to fish the cables out of the wall (this is the solution for wall mounting of course). At the amp end, a faceplate with banana plugs and 'patch leads' would be the best solution. In my eyes anyway!
Not sure how well ive explained this so if you want me to go more in depth then let me know!

tnx too | Basically, Mitsi means what you'd do is have a faceplate like this on your wall, with the back end connected directly to your fronts/rears, etc, then use ~1M or so leads with banana plugs connecting the rear of your amp to the faceplate, thus minimising the cable clutter.
I hope this clarifies things a little. |

I think i get t.
the wires FROM all the speakers connect to the rear of the face plate, where do you mount the face plate though for ease of access to it?
then you use NEW banana clip wires from the back of the Dennon amp Speaker OUT.. they connect to the front of the face plate?

Regarding the placement of the faceplate, I'd think about mounting it at the same level as you would a double socket, directly behind the position of your equipment, that way it will be covered from view by your TV stand and will also be at the same height as 13A plugs, so you can connect everything back up with a minimum of hassle.
Hope this helps. |

Personally I think faceplates look ugly and a bunch of wires emerging from a notch in the skirting and going straight into the amp doesn't look any more obtrusive.
Also, the audio purists on these forums would gag at the idea of adding another connection between the amp and speakers.
Another thing, make sure you are definitely happy with where you are locating everything, I ran all my wiring behind the skirting, painted it, mounted the AV gear on the rack and connected it all up just for the wife to tell me it didn't look how she thought it would and wanted it the other side of the room!

You're right, I've been thinking the same about if I want something moved.
i might bring all the wires from the amp to a hole in the floor, run the wires via the cellar back up to where the speaker stands are, this way Idon't get the joiner nailing through wires in the skirting LOL

I got all my speaker cables into the walls and under the floorboards when we converted our garage. Everything was fine and dandy until lo and behold I got an electric screen.
I used a stanley knife and cut two runs into the wall 1cm apart and used a screwdriver to remove the plaster from between. I then inserted the cable and held it in place with small tack nails. Two coats of polyfilla, some fine sand paper and a coat of paint et voila - it looks perfect. Even close up you can't notice anything!!
It might sound messy but it was effective. I don't know how happy you would be cutting into your new wall though!!

Mate, this is what i've done:
all cables under floors, in rear corners i've run the smallest mini trunking that marshall tufflex do (i think its called MT00)
neat silicone into the two walls forming the corner, paint it and jobs a good-un! nearly invisible, not one person has even noticed it is there.
I know your first reaction may be Urgh - trunking, but it really is tiny (exact size of the QED Anniversary XT it contains)
A bit of white heat shrink on the banana plugs helps with the missus too!
