Would This Work?

Due to an impending purchase of a fat new reciever, i`m having to put my center speaker on the top shelf (of a three tier rack) situated in front of the tv. I have been thinking about getting four of these http://www.3ddisplays.co.uk/displays...ery-blocks.htm the 4x5x5 one, and getting a 12mm glass sheet cut to stand the tv on, hence creating a raised platform for said tv. Can anyone think of a reason not to go this route (strutural etc)?

Re: Would This Work?

i may be wrong, but the weight of a tv should be spread evenly over the glass shelf. (hope this makes sense) if you were to place the new legs anywhere but above the existing legs I would think the additional weight accross the middle of the current top level would cause the glass to shatter (maybe) I would think if you were to put the new legs (or blocks) directly over the existing legs and then the new glass sheet over, this wouldnt be a problem, as it will put the weight of the tv directly through the legs and not the top layer of glass.

(apologies if this doesnt make sense)

Re: Would This Work?

Silly question but why not use a veneered MDF board instead of glass?

Re: Would This Work?

its not the glass top that is going to cause the problems, its fixing it to the existing table. to ensure the tv is secure, the weight will have to be put through the existing legs. And depending on the type of tv the OP has, the MDF may not be strong enough to cope with the weight, so 12mm glass sheet would be better.

All kit is in my sig. The stand at the moment is the standard ebuyer three tier glass one. Hence wanting to keep with glass.

Re: Would This Work?

Yeah, thought it was a silly question.... Could you not contact a local machine shop and get them to turn some new legs? Then simply add a whole new shelf layer?
