Forums first "Semi-Oppli" ???

Construction has started on what I belive to be the forums (possible) first "Semi-Oppli"

After many measurements, some headscratching and a bit of pondering, the descision(sp) has been made that a single Oppli is too low for my TV, but that a DuOppli is too tall.....

So a hybrid is to be fashioned

A doner Oppli was purchased from a forum member last week, and since then I have been planning and measuring, and I think the final design has been perfected

Basically, it consists of the same set up a DuOppli would consist of, but with the lower section being halved in height : the upright sections basically being chopped in half - from 10" high, to 5" high.

Then the upper unit, a complete, normal Oppli, is placed on top.

Gonna be making a few more modifications and custom touches, all secret for now All will be revealed in due course

Now, anyone want a pictorial as we go along?

Re: Forums first "Semi-Oppli" ???

Got most of it done today

Modified the uprights from the first Oppli, by cutting them in half (to have two uprights of equal height - bout 5" each) Then refitted the uprights in the original locations, drilled new screw holes from below, then took three of the offcuts to make centre divides, lengthwise. These needed shaving at one end by 5mm, as the length of the uprights is exactly 501mm, but the gap between them (where the shelf would sit) is 451mm, so each one had 5mm cut from it.

Then I mapped the bottom of the base board, drilled some holes, mapped this to the new "divides" and pilot hole drilled them. Then I just used self tapping screws to hold them in place. The gap they slot into is nice and tight, so that will hold them nicely, as as the tops of them all are flush, when the new, complete, Oppli is seated on top, the weight will be evenly distributed

A pic for you

Re: Forums first "Semi-Oppli" ???

Update 2;

DVD racks installed into base section. I just cut these down from some metal DVD racks bought for pence at a local Asda. Slightly different config to some of them; the first two and end two can accept a double box DVD set in each, then 4 single dvd's below, the middle two can accept 5 single DVD's aswell as an odd size DVD case above the 5 singles....

Ahhh! That's alright then. Had me worried then because personally I wouldn't spend another penny on AV kit until I'd had that lovely man from Changing Rooms round to cover all my surfaces with his emulsion.

Re: Forums first "Semi-Oppli" ???

Finished

Bought a second, second hand item today (ebay, 6 miles away, £17 ) and half an hour later, it was done Mapped the base of the new unit for the holes for the DVD racks, then added some more holes to insert the metal locking pins that the top section uses (left over from the first doner unit) Then simply lowered it onto the base section, tightened the locking pins and voila! All locked together - nice and solid

Tested so far with my own weight (a good 15stone ) and it don't seem to budge, so should be fine with my lardy TV on it and a few AV source units

Thanks all

Just itching to get moved so I can actually use it! So far all it has become is a space for cats to lie in the sun below the window! Still they are happy - three cats, all have a seperate "compartment" to sit in

Re: Forums first "Semi-Oppli" ???

A very nice design and clever use of space Matt_C. These Opplis certainly are dead cheap if you know where to look and it's very easy to customise them to your own individual requirements. Well done.

Re: Forums first "Semi-Oppli" ???

Umm, think it was £42! £25 for the first Oppli from a forum member, then the second came from Ebay for £17.33 - seller let me off the 33p as I said I'd collect and pay cash!
