Ikea Lack

Hi. Has Anyone Cut The Base Of An Ikea Lack Unit. Was Planning To Buy Two And Cut The Base Of One To Use As Sides For The Other So As To Make The Gap Between The Bottom And The Top 28cm And Use The Spare Wood To Make A Backboard, But Dont No If You Can Cut And Drill That Type Of Board.
Any Ideas.

Re: Ikea Lack

The boards are basically sandwiches of vaneer with a cardboard honey cone centre.

They have chip board in the areas where strength is needed for screws etc.

If you cut the boards, you would have to dig out some of the card board and glue in some battons so you can fix them in place.

You could use the sides from the second unit and make it double height..

or replace the sides with something else.. ie glass bricks, metal poles or something to give you the height you need but still look good.

Ikea do some table legs for 1.75 each which you could cut down to length and attach to the under side of the top shelf and sit it on the lower.

The other option is to use doors from another range in the same colour as these are made from chip board..

But you would have to double them up to get the thickness.

Re: Ikea Lack

I looked at the possibility of using the bases as sides to give more height, the only problem was that the undersides of the top and bases are unpainted. It would have looked awful, unless you can somehow recreate the veneer finish.

Re: Ikea Lack

found this.

The birth of the LACK table is a classic IKEA story. Once upon a time, most wood furnishings were made of solid wood. This is fine, but not always ideal.

Then one day, an IKEA product developer was touring a door factory. He noticed how they made strong yet lightweight doors using a construction method called board-on-frame. This is a sandwich construction of a honeycomb core surrounded by layers of wood. It looked solid but was lightweight. It was environmentally friendly because it used less timber. It could be stronger than solid wood, and best of all, it was more cost-effective.
