Thanks: Gave 436, Got 474 | Looking for ideas on building an hi-fi stand
I'm hoping that this thread will give me some ideas on building a stand to house my various pieces of kit. I cannot buy an "off the peg" stand as some of the equipment is too deep.
What I had in mind was a 5 shelf stand. The equipment it will hold is as follows:
Bottom shelf:Sony CDP-CX455 Cd player
Dim (w/h/d) - 430 x 189 x 537mm
Second from bottom: Pioneer VSX - 415 amp
Dim (w/h/d) - 420 x 158 x 295
Middle shelf: Denon TU-260LII Tuner
Dim - Standard
Second from top: SKY +
Dim - Standard
Top shelf: Samsung HD950
As you can see, it is really only the depth of the CD player that is giving me problems.
Other criteria:
Stand is to be no more than 600mm wide in total and include some form of cable tidy at the back.
In terms of performance, am I best going for a maple wood or glass shelves (or is there a noticeable difference?)
I can buy spiked feet from the web, but have been unable to find any uprights to support the shelves. Does anyone have any links they could share?
As this is going to be a one-off build, I want to get it right first time, so would appreciate feed back from anyone with advice.
Cheers - Dony (N.Ire, in case any local handymen are reading)

Thanks for that....I've already looked at that site. Some amazing stands there too but sadly no good for me. My joinery skills are non existant sadly, which is why I want to get as much info as I can (as well as the raw materials such as the wood cut to measure and the spikes etc) to take to a local joiner. I want to tell him what I want, rather than what he wants to make!!!!!!
Good advice on that site regarding the best wood to use as well.

How about something like this? http://www.tnt-audio.com/clinica/flexye.html
I made something similar to use as a projector mount.
If you can drill a hole in some wood, and use a spanner you'll be fine!
Build diary of someone making their own flexy rack can be found here.

I made something similar to the stand posted by miniholic. The same basic construction- threaded rods and nuts, but I hid the rods and nuts using tubing. I got the tubing from B&Q, designed for hanging rails in wardrobes.
I used washers that were a good fit inside the tubing, which helped locate the tubing.

Thanks for the info guys......those flexy racks look interesting (and flexible for future updates). Luckily I can just about drill a hole so these should not be beyond my limited talents. Have to check with the other half as she would like something that looks like a decent piece of furniture (hence the natural wood I was thinking off).
Any other ideas gladly appreciated.

This is what I used for a long time. The shelves are solid planks of Iroko and the legs were turned on a Lathe out of Zebrano. You can simply use threaded bar and glued in bolts. Total cost was about £350 for the wood and materials (doesn't include time!)

Dony, I would love to build you one but shipping to Ireland would probably cost as much as the rack.
Look to specialist wood dealers. I don't know of any in Ireland but there must be some. Try this forum for info on wood dealers etc. If you choose the wood carefully then it needn't cost the earth. If you can get someone to turn the wood then all you need is some dowels and you could simply glue the whole thing together.

I have decided to build a Flexi stand to accomodate my equipment. Thanks for all the advice guys. I came across this site which should help in the build process also. I like the use of the aluminium supports to conceal the threaded rods. I'll post pics once complete http://www.mr2turbo.pwp.blueyonder.c...VRackBuild.htm |
