In need of a 5 shelf AV rack that will take a heavy amp.

I'm in need of a 5 shelf AV rack, however the ones I've seen seam a bit to flimsy to take the weight of my equipment.

It needs to take:-

Sky HD (when it arrives)
Sony 400 CD multi changer
Denon 2900 DVD player
Denon POE-10 Pre amp
Denon 10SE amp.

I would probably stack them in that order with the 10SE at the bottom.

Anyone have or could suggest a good unit?

Cheers,
Glenn.

Check out the Atacama (www.atacama-audio.co.uk)
range of racks, they are welded steel contruction and really well made, you may want to use an av double width rack as well which will keep the overall height down.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm now thinking that a 3 shelf wider stand is the way to go.
Something like this :-

Sky HD (when it arrives)
-----------------------------------------------------
||--------------------------------------------------||
||__Denon POE-10 Pre amp Denon 2900 DVD player_||
-----------------------------------------------------
||--------------------------------------------------||
|| Denon 10SE amp Sony 400 CD multi changer_||
-----------------------------------------------------
||--------------------------------------------------||

Only thing that worries me is the weight on one shelf.
I like the looks of the Atacama Equinox AV unit & the Soundstyle XS310 3 Shelf AV Rack. It's just the cost of either is a bit scarey!

Budget? Good question, kind of depends on how much my car cost to get through it's MOT!

Certainly not over £400, I think about £300 would be OK.

optimum make some good racks.....the nice thing is they do a variety of widths, but more importantly a variety of rod heights between each shelf.....so you can have one extra high for ventilation on the power amp, the other more snug to the equipment...heh

i got a 4 shelf (that includes the top) 900mm wide one for £400.......they did a 1100mm one as well tho.....they do 10mm and 6mm glass........on mine i have my Denon 3910 bottom, then 3803 one up, then A5 above that, then centre speaker on the top (but did have my 28in Widescreen CRT on the top until recently)......and its nice and sturdy :-)

www.optimum2000.com (or .co.uk) is the website, you can buy direct (i think) or from somewhere like 7oaks shops....

they do different finishes on the leg rods as well.....

Optimum Direct prices tend to be higher than reseller prices.

How about a Norstone rack.

The Bergen AV is lush and look at the specs regards to how much weight yopu can put on them

http://www.intoav.com/avfurniture/avstands.htm

£275 for the Bergen AV? Bargain

Also I have just purchased a Partington Minim AV stand and it's great

Pics - Partington Minim AV Rack

It's about £350 which is a lot, but quality and finish are superb

I asked Partington what weight it takes. Their reply was that they've never found anything at all it couldn't take. I advised I have a 55Kg CRT TV. They advised me that it was no problem whatsoever. They also advised me to keep the middle (adjustable) shelf firmly held though (tightened by Allen Key).

I bought a Soundstyle XS310 last week 2nd hand. That rack takes a heavy setup too. I bought the Partington as got a bargain on it the next week and sold the soundstyle to a friend.

The Partington to me just oozes class. Available in grey/silver finish etc too.

Dan.

I do like the look of that Bergen AV rack, and yes it DOES take a good weight!

Due to finances, or lack there of, I'll probably have to wait a month or two but I now have a few ideas thanks to all of you who have posted.

Seem to be best prices I've found:

This may help. I almost got the Bergen AV myself. Very close call

If not do a search for Flexirack

Ok, here's some high-res linkage....

Norstone Designs Hi-Res Photo archive, includes tech drawings

http://www.inovadis.com/ftp/Photothe....html#Norstone

Here's a high-res image of the Bergen AV (£275) which I believe you had been considering

http://www.inovadis.com/ftp/Photothe...V/BergenAV.jpg
(Fantastic to see a company provide such a high-res high-quality photo of their products!)

As mentioned above in this thread by Rodster, Atacama makes quality units.

Here's linkage to this site

http://www.atacama-audio.co.uk/

They've produced a nice AV stand and have added a plasma bracket onto it as well as an option. Here's some high-res imagery I've found on it. Available in different finishes....

http://www.nordtele.no/Vedlegg/Publi...s_AV_30826.jpg

Normally Atacama AV works out about £200 for the base module (bottom 2 shelves) and about £150 to add the next layer (excluding plasmas bracket option though), making it about £400

Glenn - greetings from the US! I'm a recent member to this great forum and have been helping out UK'ers get their hands on the new Toshiba HD-DVD players...

Just came across the AV Stands forums and wanted to throw in my two cents. I personally use Salamander Synergy racks for both my 2-channel (Single 40) and HT systems (Twin 20) and could not be happier! Beautiful real wood veneer finishes, infinitely adjustable shelf spacing, and expandable at any time - extra shelves, doors, sides, extensions, etc. I don't know if these are available in the UK or not, but maybe there's a similiar product available.

These racks cost more than average, but could easily last a lifetime. Built like a tank, these can hold 100s of lbs easily. My Twin 20 supports my 200+ lb 34" Sony widescreen, heavy Yamaha amp, 25 lb Yamaha DVD-CX1, 20 lb Yamaha DV-C6480, etc.

Now if I can just figure how to upload pix, I'd be able to show you my systems...

For a cheaper but still good looking unit check this out.... http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/store...61*15641*15962

Holds all of the kit in my signature + spare DVD player and X-Box with room to spare, although I did have a few more shelves knocked up a the local hardware store for a few £'s each.

Glenn - you're welcome! The Synergy line also have a VERY high WAF!

In terms of housing a heavy amp, you could easily place the amp on the main bottom shelf, rated for 300 lbs. Even an intermediate (ie, internal) shelf is rated to hold up to 120 lbs with standard shelf pegs - or 150 lbs with heavy shelf bracket in lieu of pegs.

The beauty of a Twin unit is each bay's shelves can be individually spaced. So if you have a tall amp on the left side, it won't affect shelf spacing on the right side. So you can space out your gear and shelves so there's equal gaps between the top of the gear and the next shelf above. These racks are truly about as customizable as they come...

If you look at Salamander's original Archetype line, you can see how you can easily make this design yourself with some threaded rods, nuts and washers. Of course, not nearly as nice looking as the Synergy line...

FYI, I am ONLY connected to Salamander as a very satisifed customer. If you had a local woodworker to make the main top and bottom shelves, you can buy the basic hardware (rails, shelf pegs, etc) from an eBay company called 80/20 Surplus. I recently bought some extra rails from them (much cheaper than from Salamander) to convert my Twin20 to a Twin30 or Twin40.
