Anyone know of some decent DVD storage for 600 dvds?

I'm moving next week and need a decent storage cabinet for my dvd's. I'd rather one that's specifically for DVD's, or one where the shelves are the right sizes for DVD's to maximise storage space. Does anyone have any suggestions? Ideally nice looking, but I might put them in the second bedroom if not so cheap storage ideas would also be appreciated! Cheers!

Certainly cheap and cheerful! A good height but a shame they don't do a wider one! 7 standing side by side is crying out to all go toppling over!

i dunno, a lot i'm not going to waste time counting them. i have far more cd's tho. with dvds you get one row per shelf, plus space above each row where you can cram in more. you can get two rows of cds on each shelf plus a few crammed on top. i've also got dvds piled on top of the shelves, almost to the ceiling in places. i've used those shelves for years, adding another each year or so and chucking out crap and stuff to save space. at £25 each they are a bargain, and even a DIY amatuer like me can put them together without much bother

no. i prefer to watch my dvds. thats what they were made for

i find the whole idea of that type of software rather geekish and pointless apart from if you want to brag to other geeks online about how many dvds you have. if you have a really large number of cds and dvds you wouldnt want to waste your time cataloguing them, and prefer to watch and iisten to them instead. if you have time to catalogue, you obviously dont have a big collection, so why bother cataloguing

for insurance purposes i have photographs to proove i have large amounts of cds and dvds. you cant quite make out the names, but it's enough to proove i havent just claimed i own loads of dvds to diddle the insurance claims

Ha ha! Fair enough....!

Sneaks off to hide collection....!

I just find it useful personally. When I go shopping at lunch I often see dvd's on sale and forget it I've got some of them! I can quickly log on at work and see if I have or haven't so it's good in that respect, plus if friends want to borrow any (and I theirs) we can see what we've got. Only takes a few seconds to add each one anyway....!

my collection was too big before i had regular internet access, so starting off would be such a pain. and you can just forget about listing cds and records. even if i had a barcode scanner than could read everything it would still be a big job

and i'm sure you have guessed by now that nothing is in alphabetical order. even before reading or seeing high fidelity i realised that was a particularly geekish thing thing to do. i used to group styles of music together on shelves, and artists where i had loads of stuff i would put together to make easier to find, so it was grouped in some kind of order, rock, rap, rnb, jazz, soundtracks, classical, etc, but never alphabetically. after moving, as i had so much stuff, i was glad to get them back on shelves, but i've never felt inclined to sort through the lot back into order. in some way it creates a new listening experience coming across stuff in random order. buying so much stuff also makes it hard to keep in order, the new stuff just gets piled on top. altho it might not sound it, but at least everything looks reasonably neat

I like to keep mine in order too. I think that now I'm moving I'll seperate them a bit, so foreign films, TV dvd's, etc are seperate. That way the new girlfriend is more likely to find films she'll want to watch in there (she doesn't do subtitles....! )

I had mine custom made by a company called ARC Engineering.
I hve a 9 shelf unit. each shelf is the height of a DVD case. This is all constructed from polished diamond plate aluminium and looks the dogs. no photo as i am moving to OZ in a few weeks and it has all been dismantled (another great plus you can build, dismantle and reasemble as many times as you like without it falling to bits).

Mine is 950mm wide by 2200mm high it holds about 60 on each self thats 540 on my unit but he makes them to your requirements.

Well worth giving him a ring ask to speak to Steve Hodd on 01424 715 220 he deilivers anywhere in the country as well i believe. If you tell him Aidy gave you his details he will know what rack you mean i had a lot of conversations with him about making this.

Beware they are not cheap but will last forever unlike the argos and ikea shelving units out there.

it's the middle shelf thats fixed as that partly holds it together. then you have lots of little notches where you put plastic bits in that hold the other shelves. easy enough to move shelves if you want to change them

you get them in different colours, but they don't seem to have black anymore. mines are varying colours as they keep changing them around and not doing the same colour as previous. i suppose i could cover them with sticky back plastic or something

with all the cds on them the shelves have bent a bit due to the weight, but my oldest shelves must be over 10 years old, and they have survived moving house a couple of times, so they are sturdy enough, even tho made of chipboard and mdf and cheap crap

I have just installed these over the week end, again from Ikea, they look very neat and hold 140 DVDs each. The bit I most like is that they bolt to the wall and do not go down to the floor. A nice design feature. I will probably add some lighting in the future

well i bought a couple of the argos tall, wide bookcases mentioned above (one for books and one for dvds)

they both got filled straight away so i think i may buy a couple more

they seem good enough. they are only £25 each and you get what you pay for, they do have a bracket for attaching to the wall which is a good idea

Any chance of letting us know how much you paid? I may end up giving the guy a call.

As I need to put my unit in an alcove (same height as yours, but about 1250mm wide) I think I'm going to have to go down the custom-built route to make the most of my space. By my reckoning, a unit of that size should be able to store 700+ DVD's, which is roughly how many I have.

Cheers.

DVD storage

I am quite new to this site. Am looking for good home cinema kits. I noticed the thread on DVD storage. I have used a crowd called red displays who make storage racks for DVDs and CDs. Smashing quality, I have two of them stacked together. Prices are ok too. worth checking them out. site is www.reddisplays.com
